We have some new inductees. They were announced awhile ago, but I wasn't on top of it. My bad.

Here's what we got this year:



  • Grand Theft Auto III
  • Space Invaders
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • The Oregon Trail
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • The Sims

Yeah, that looks about right. The Sims is a bit of an eye-roller, but otherwise, these are pretty good choices.

Finalists that did not make the final cut: Elite, Final Fantasy, John Madden Football, Minecraft, Nürburgring, Pokémon Red and Green, Sid Meier’s Civilization, Street Fighter II, and Tomb Raider.

Honestly had to look up Elite and Nürburgring. The latter doesn't even have a Wiki article.

No sports game belongs on this list, and I can't believe they're even considered.

Ultima and Everquest came first. But WoW came and beat them both out :P Yeah yeah... Call it casual. It was compared to Everquest and Ultima. That's one reason it became so popular. Accessibility. Though Blizzard took that even further once WoTLK and Cataclysm came out.

Oh, absolutely. You're talking about one of the most famous games of all time right there. Retro gamers, dads still living in the 80s, and young children being taught about "the good ol' days of gaming," are all over the place, and a lot of them are playing games like the original SMB and the original DOOM. Not to mention speedrunners. And some people just genuinely like playing those games, regardless of the nostalgia value.

- It is not influential. It does absolutely nothing new as a video game. It takes a bunch of older ideas present in 80s and 90s titles and reintroduces them into the world of modern gaming. That's cool and all, but it's not groundbreaking.

Like I said--ten years or more, and maybe you could justify having it up there. Right now, it's just kind of a meme game.

And yes, World of Warcraft is the newest title currently on the list. It was released in 2004.

So yes, I'd say the game has to be at least a decade old, or you're stretching the term "longevity."

WoW was inducted last year.

I'd expect Final Fantasy and Pokémon to be inducted next year. They had to induct Zelda first.

Minecraft isn't quite old enough yet, imo. Even then, I'd be hesitant to put it up there before some other things.

I'm glad to see Sonic on the list. Even if the fanbase is beyond autistic, I still think the original 2D Sonic games were fun as hell.
