Why Star Wars: Battlefront seems limited

We're in a time where features from previous games are going to start getting cut from sequels. Especially when you look at games with a time gap like Star Wars: Battlefront. Studios aren't doing this because 'fuck customers' and they're not doing this because 'money grubbing DLC mongers.' They're doing this because a game has a budget, and they can only fit so many things into that budget.

So why are features being cut? Because the cost of producing content in general is ballooning. Look at some of the material that has come out so far for Battlefront. That blaster pistol probably has more detail in it than all the character models in Battlefront 2 put together. A single character model, weapons included, might have as much detail as half a battlefront 2 map. They've got to pay people to do that, and the demand for detail is increasing much quicker than increases in the productivity of art creation tools.

You used to be able to have a character artist that knocked out all of the character models in a game. Now you need an entire team of character artists just to work on some of the more important characters. This translates into dollars, lots and lots of dollars. And that's just art, the same extends to programming and content scripting as well. Everything is way more complex than it used to be. This object has to behave differently depending on what caliber of bullet struck it. We need to make sure the physics simulation on these plants behaves reasonably when they get blown across the map by a rocket. This is all stuff that didn't used to matter at all, but now is taken for granted and expected in modern games.

So where it used to be that 50 million dollars would get you so much content with so many game modes, that now has been cut down dramatically. The cost of each individual bit of content has skyrocketed to the point where the same amount of money won't get you remotely as far. Features that are less popular are going to be hacked off, and maybe added back on as DLC, because DLC expands the budget and lets these features pay for themselves.

Of course, this doesn't justify the lack of features. The publishers and developers going into this should have known it was going to be a large budget game, that would more than likely easily make back the costs if done correctly. Hell, I'm sure most of us would appreciate the game being delayed if that meant more content upon release. Of course, they don't want to come out and say this, so instead they'll say "Well, it was a design choice to limit play space", which is a crock of shit, and they know it.

TL;DR: Games are getting more compact and focused because the amount of money it costs to produce content is growing faster than the amount of revenue generated by any given game. If you want content, it has to be paid for somehow. DLC is likely to be that somehow.

I'd like to point out that that picture is extremely misleading.

For example Battlefront 2 did not have 33 maps. It had 16 ground ones (most of which were shit) and 2 space ones. The only difference between the space ones was the ship placement and the skybox.

The classes were all basically carbon copies of each other too except for the CIS.

This isn't a sequel to Battlefront 2. This is a reboot. If they're simplifying things to benefit the overall cohesiveness of the game, then so be it.

I don't think there's any good defense for this game when it comes to the shit that we already know. The only one that can have a defense is the space battles. Maybe the reason for them not being at launch is because DICE wants to focus on the game and then add them latter on. Other than that it's just shiity decisions.

The game is going to sell itself for example look at GTA 5. That game banked over a billion withing two days. Battlefront is going to bank as well. They can put the same amount of passion and beyond what was put into the second game and still bank.

Oh please. EA has billions so they can aford to give this game a founding. It's not like GTA 5 which the developers hired real people to rescript the dialog to make it more realistic. It's not also like GTA SA which the developers hired famous people like Samuel L. Jackson to voice characters. That game has a lot of famous people in it. With Battlefront the game is not going to have as high of a budget as what those two games did. All it needs is a large enough budget and little advertising. It's just EA being greedy.

OK so it's a reboot. Why should that be a reason why it has less content but still is going to cost more than Battlefront 2 at launch? It being a reboot shouldn't mean it's OK for it to have 40 players and have the ATAT's on a scribed path. It really shouldn't be all that hard to develop this game. It's bascilly going to be Star Wars Battlefield. They already have a engine built due to Battlefield. Just because it's a reboot shouldn't mean it's going to have less content than the game that came out before it which is a 2005 game.

Video game costs are historically low compared to inflation-adjusted prices in the past, yes we demand exponentially more from them in a shorter schedule. Of course DLC is going to be a reality for all major triple-A games. Adjusted for inflation, BF2 cost more than the new one will cost. Hell, Ocarina of Time cost $60-70 back in the 90's, and that's without adjusting for inflation.
