Actually money is how the community steers work.
Steers work as in making mods that are nothing more than a cash grab. This is going to cause a shit load of spam mods just to make a quick buck.

Lol they had it in r/gaming. Surprised the mods even allowed people to criticize him.
r/pcmasterrace would tear him apart.

Gamers are the most entitled shits sometimes.

Because Valve is monetizing what use to be a free feature of PC gaming, banning people who speak out about it, removing mods that want to stay free and let people donate to them instead, telling modders its ok to use other peoples work in their mods if they're free (which forces people to monetize their mods so Valve can make more moolah), and basically destroying the modding community by removing the incentive to share resources and collaborate on projects?

Then don't use their service. It's not that hard. Speak with your wallets, not raging on the internet.

You realize that "speak with your wallet" doesn't actually work right? Shit that's bad for the industry will still sell because there are enough uneducated and stupid people out there that companies can get away with it. In this case Valve is getting money for doing absolutely nothing so this initiative can't actually go in the red. Not to mention that Valve basically as a monopoly on the market so if you're going to do legit PC gaming you have to go through their service.

Next you're going to tell me that trickle down economics actually works and the "free market" will actually solve a damn thing.

Don't buy Valve products or use their services. You can list your reasonings why on the internet, but doing just that doesn't affect anything. Look at Microsoft and the Xbox One. People complained for months, and Microsoft told their fans to shove it. Then after E3 when Microsoft saw the Xbox One was not doing well in preorders, then they changed their polices.

Money speaks, and if you think it doesn't then you're just uneducated.

It's not bad for the gaming industry. It's bad for Valve. This is a PC centric topic. Consoles will still have the industry thrive. You can still easily buy games and products outside of Steam if you're a PC fag. Or better yet, still use steam, just don't buy the fucking mods.

What part of Valve having a near monopoly do you not understand? MS actually has competition. Money only speaks when a company has something to lose. Valve has nothing to lose by doing this since there are enough uneducated sheep out there that will buy mods and even if the numbers aren't as high as they want them to be they're still making profit since Valve doesn't have to actually do anything to make a profit off of this. They literally can not go in the red on this initiative and if a company can't go in the red then there's no reason to change since by continuing to stay the course they'll still be seeing gains. If you're on the PC you basically have to go with Steam unless you want to be a priatefag. Sure there's GOG, but they mainly deal with older titles and everyone else just sells steam keys. Hell even most physical copies still have to be activated with steam.

I never said that I was specifically talking about mods, it was a general example that things and practices that are bad for the industry still work because there are enough people out there who are either uneducated or don't care for it to still give them a profit despite the fact that a few thousand people may have boycotted. And yes, monetizing mods is bad for the industry. It sets the precedent of games becoming a money making service instead of a product. That's basically all CS:GO, TF2, and DOTA are at this point. They're platforms for Valve to do minimal work on and still make bank off of due to taking a 75% cut of the profit from user generated content.

If you consider Nintendo rehashing its IPs and making blatant money grabs, MS making a bunch of remasters, and Sony going bankrupt on the console side of things to be thriving then sure it's thriving.

That doesn't work because Valve doesn't expect to make a huge profit from mods, and their entire income isn't dependent on mods.

Gabe was lying, they actually do make quite a bit of money off of them. Just look at CS:GO, TF2, and DOTA 2. That's just PR damage control from the fat man. They already made 10k in two days by doing absolutely nothing off of Skyrim alone.
