Whoever decided it was a good idea to have a WW1 style machine gun act as an assault rifle in Fallout 4 should never go near weapon design ever again

Yeah, sort of. It's supposed to be how they viewed sci-fi in the 40's/50's.

The 20's thing is a bit off. I'd argue it'd only go back to the 30's at most.

I thought it was supposed to be the 50's view of the 60's, but with a heavy inspiration from Mad Max/ A Boy And His Dog.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.

Arguably 20's as the submachine is based on the Thompson (created 1922). Also the music has some 20's stuff in there or covers done in the 30's and 40's iirc, but that's a stretch at best.

Cheers Vien for the upload. Didn't like spending further money on Fallout merch, apart from the Tshirts, mugs, posters, pipboy edition...

Was the pipboy worth it?

The Thompson was widely used until around the late 60s-70s. The music also went all the way up into the 50s and 60s when you bring New Vegas into the equation. I was personally pleased to hear the rock and roll.

Meh.

Looks great on a shelf, a bit cumbersome if you try playing the game with it, autistic if you try and walk around in public with it.

Thankfully I stopped at stage 2. The box and the metal cd case are a nice addition, but imo not worth the Β£100 price tag it came with.

Even less so since they later went and made an actual functioning standalone pipboy without the phone slot.

Yeah I'm pretty glad I couldn't afford it at the time. The deluxe edition is fucking ridiculous though, $350 for a Bluetooth speaker and alarm cock.

Fallout 4's buildings look like awkward lollipops. Fallout 3, for all its faults, managed to carry the gritty retrofuturism aesthetic of the older games in its buildings a lot better, complete with the weird faces on walls.

It was originally supposed to be an MG for Power Armoured troops, and they were gonna bring back the Chinese Assault Rifle from FO3 to fill the assault rifle role, but time constraints meant the CAR was never implemented (Unfinished models and textures can be found in the game files) and they stupidly called the thing we have no an assault rifle.

I just have a mod that renames it to a machine gun so it's all good.

I think the institute weapons are probably some of the worst weapons I've ever seen in a game. They look ugly aesthetically, they take up around a third of the screen and are pretty much universally worse than the bog standard laser rifle you can get.

0/10

That laser rifle looks a hell of a lot more appealing than the one we're using at the moment and it still has a 50's design theme to it. Hell the concept image looks closer to a 50's designed sci-fi weapon than the current one.

Makes sense from a story standpoint.

- Made from plastics because they're easier to assemble and cheap to produce (though let's not get into where they got the plastic from). Very efficient at the cost of fire-power, in an environment entirely closed off from the outside world.

- Institute uses synths which are just shy of terminator-level strength and resilience, against foes which at best would have scrounged up lower levels of technology (right up until the BoS turned up, anyway) to fight back. Synths are expendable, so are the guns. It follows on to...

- If most of your missions are scavenging tech from the surface and taking it back to an inaccessible bunker underground for research, there's no need for gatling lasers to kill molerats and radroaches. Same for kidnappings and replacements, who your grabbing is unlikely to be well armed to defend themselves. Send in the synths with batons to bludgeon the dude and then teleport out for "questioning".

yeah but that doesn't make them any more fun to use
