Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
So I bought this game the other night and it's a game I've always wanted to play but never had the chance to until now. Anyways, I'll update this thread on my progress and tell you guys what I think of it and all that jazz.

Usually when I go back to play games on the NES/SNES/Genesis I just play them for a little bit for nostalgia sake and won't touch them for a while. That is not the case with Super Metroid, as I am enjoying this game a ton and plan on finishing it.

I'm currently making my way through Norfair. Apparently I missed grabbing the Power Bomb in Brinstar like the noob I am so I can't open any of the orange doors so I know I'm missing out on whatever's behind them, like a map for Norfair or more energy tanks and missiles.

Will update later when I play some more.

what's your favorite thing about the game so far? for me it's the atmosphere

i've found that the game is best played alone in a dark room at night—i haven't had a more immersive experience playing a game

My favorite thing would have to be the atmosphere along with the music. Really digging the Alien vibe that I'm getting from this game. The game also has it's own identity too. I don't know how to explain it really.

The music is fantastic. It's creepy, ominous, and somehow catchy too and really brings this alien planet that you're on to life.

With Nintendo, you expect games to be full of life and cheery because of how the Mario games are for example. Then you play a game like Super Metroid and it's the complete opposite.

I wonder how many kids that bought and played this game back in the day felt when they first played it.

After a constant "what do I do now" I decided to backtrack to Brinstar since I remembered about the enemies that I can freeze and turn into platforms to jump to places I couldn't get before.

I went through some unexplored rooms and eventually found the power bomb. Now it seems like I can progress further now in places where I got stuck.

yee, it's kinda tricky though

technically, there's a couple of monkey-like creatures in green brinstar that demonstrate how to do it, but even then, it won't be 100% clear what you're supposed to do button-wise

being able to figure out stuff like this for myself is one of my favorite things about the game, so i'll just put it in a spoiler

Spoiler
if you do a spin jump towards a wall, then hit the opposite direction as soon as you touch it, you'll notice that samus's sprite will change

if you hit A at this point with proper timing, she'll jump off the wall, which can be done repeatedly to climb up just about any vertical shaft that doesn't have a ceiling or something blocking you

I'll have to give this a try.

That's also one thing I'm enjoying about the game is the lack of information it gives you on how to control Samus. I didn't even know you could sprint until I got stuck on that disappearing bridge part in green Brinstar. I started pressing buttons out of frustration and noticed her running faster and used that to get across.

a lot of people don't seem to realize this, but the MP music for metroid prime 2 is actually a remix of that theme

Is the Planet Zebes music from Smash 64 in any of the Metroid games?

Alright so I backtracked even more and made my way back to the surface and got back to Samus's ship. I went through Crateria again and found any missing missile upgrades.

I'm going through my original entry point in Brinstar and found a bunch of hidden pathways. I'm in a shaft where there's little aliens singing the item room jingle and showing me how to wall jump.

After nearly an hour and a half, I finally figured out wall jumping and made it to the top of that shaft. Never felt that proud of myself in a game for awhile, holy shit. I'm afraid at what I'm gonna walk into next.

Fell down a giant shaft in Brinstar when I found a hidden passage. Down this walkway was a green bird-alien looking thing that runs past you so I ignored him since you can't interact with him. I realized there was no other way out other than to try wall jumping up this huge shaft which will take me forever. I tried jumping up it for about 45 minutes but failed every time.

I tried to sprint down the corridor since I got the super speed to get a higher jump to start up the shaft. That didn't work either. However one time I started sprinting, I must have pressed something on accident and noticed that Samus was glowing. I jumped and then just like that I was out of that shaft.

Me after realizing that bird was blatantly telling me how to escape the whole time.

That big fat orange alien with the 4 eyes. I'm guessing he's a miniboss since he was fairly easy to kill.

I didn't expect his carcass to jump out at you like the way it did. When that happened I thought you were going to have to fight him again.

TIL you can break the glass tube that's underwater to get to Maridia with the power bomb.

Also I have no idea on how to get past that huge lava pool in Norfair.

getting to maridia is another one of those awesome "damn i'm a genius" moments, though maridia itself is probably my least favorite area in the game

Swinging around with the grapple beam is so damn cool. I love the sound effect it makes.

I wonder if the Swingshot from Ratchet and Clank was inspired by this.

I've never played Melee but this is now my favorite rendition of the Planet Zebes theme. This theme alone is probably my new favorite all-time track by Nintendo.

There's even more great tracks in the prime games. Are ya planning on giving them a shot?

Maybe, well it depends. Can I buy the games on the Wii U?

If not, I'd have to go to this local game store that sells older consoles and games to see if they have a Gamecube and Metroid: Prime.

Yeah you can get almost the whole Metroid series including The prime trillogy which comes together.
The ones you will be missing though are Metroid 2 and it's remake and pinball.

Are they good ports? Do they have any technical problems or anything missing from their original versions on the Gamecube?

The ports are fine as far as I know, however they did patch out alot of cool sequence breaks thay made the speed running community what it was. One boss in Prime 2 got nerfed a bit since it was so notoriously hard that even the devs had to use resort to using mode to beat it. Also, the Normal difficulty in the trillogy is the originals' easy mode while Veteran is the original Normal mode.

Most important, the Prime trillogy uses motion controlls exclusively so take that as you will.
