could you expand on that
On b.net, there's occasionally a 'what game takes the most skill?' poll, and there is generally a lot of salty replies over people not thinking their favourite game takes the most skill. It doesn't happen often but I still think it's a bit dumb to be rating games based solely on skill, when a majority of the people in those threads wouldn't give two shits about the top level competitive metagame under any other circumstances.

You can defend it all you want but it takes 0 skill when you got the Designated Spam Rifle and rapid fire no recoil Magnum
you dont have an actual argument about why it takes no skill though. call it a spam rifle all you want but the reality is that it punished bad players for being inaccurate. the faster you shot and the more accurate you were the better you were. it rewarded mechanical skill. the default version actively punished people for performing well with the weapon and introduced an element of RNG to gunfights that should have been based on individual skill. ZBNS had a much, much higher skillcap than vanilla.

Disagree. If you're playing on "crushing" difficulty, expect to get crushed. That's kinda the idea.

Either get better, or lower the difficulty

Well, I also take issue with the concept of varying difficulty levels, too. There's always one difficulty level the game was designed to be played on -- so fucking play it on that. Unless each level is hand-crafted to actually be more or less challenging with genuine, tangible differences, I just think it's lazy. Making enemies do more damage, have higher accuracy, higher awareness, or take more hits before dying doesn't actually improve the game in any meaningful way.

I'm not against hard games, or, making games harder. The Last of Us is a million times more fun to play on Grounded because

I don't criticise Uncharted for it's difficulty -- I criticise it for how it becomes more difficult: with bullshit and laziness.

Games shouldn't be made to be "easier" or "harder" for anyone -- they should reflect the desires of the creator, and what she envisioned. I assume we're on the same page with that one.

Mainly because it's not just the base gameplay I'm in it for.

I can't go play in front of 60,000 people on a whim, and take control of an organization and hire/fire/train players.

People who say this to me, ironically play racing games, to which I just say "Why not just go drive irl :^)?"

I understand the gripes with sports games, especially since I hate almost all of them, but that is just a silly reason.

Games are often, if not always, meant to have some artistic input, and the integration of very realistic-looking environments or models can make a game experience much more immersive. Games like Red Dead Redemption thrive off of the aesthetic appeal of the environments, and I can certainly say that the experience wouldn't be nearly as great if the game looked like trash.

VII is a good game. Incredibly dated, but good. Best RPG of all time? Nah.

Because you absolutely do not need realistic graphics to have immersion. In fact, it's LESS immersive, because the more realistic something is, the more attune your brain is to finding every little imperfection--whereas in a more stylized game, you can naturally accept anything that you see, and be immersed.

You can praise a game for looking good. You can decry a game for looking ugly.

But whether a game looks good or bad has little to do with the number of polygons that are rendered.

Everybody already knows that Quake is the best anyways.
i've always liked quake solely on the basis that trent reznor made the soundtrack (for the first one, anyway), but i've always wondered if you've ever actually tried your hand at any other competitive shooter

Because you absolutely do not need realistic graphics to have immersion. There's a difference between a game that's been stylized and a game that just doesn't look good. Gaming is a partially cinematic experience, because a lot of how a player processes what's going on around them is determined by the appearance of what they're interacting with. Absorbing the atmosphere created by the scenic parts of Red Dead (I'm going to keep using it as an example) isn't possible without the actual art being showcased- I wouldn't be able to admire the views as much if they had poor graphics, and that isn't a matter of style. Games that strive to look realistic should be criticized if they don't pull it off. Appearance does make a difference, and can give a game a completely different flavor depending on how art is represented.
