It meant a lot to people way back when. It was one of the first machinimas they'd seen, plus it was in one of their favorite games ever.

The Rage....
It was decent. It had its moments but the CGI killed it for me.

It's appeal is something that obviously isn't aimed at you.
i like a lot of things that aren't "aimed" at me
Hopefully you aim something at yourself soon

this would be a pretty sick burn if it was at all necessary or warranted

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
It's 2015

how the hell do you not know what Red vs Blue is?
i never said i didn't know what it was
i've just never seen it before

hence "i started... on a whim"
Oh

well reading all the comments, I'll throw in my onions.

Decent comedy show that shoulda ended at season 10. Had its moments

Vastly overrated.
I'd say season five...

But yeah, it was a new thing, being on the very early wave of machinima, and it was Halo, so it had those going for it at the time, in addition to the occasional stroke of comedic... silver.

Bear in mind the video you posted was uploaded in 2008
A year after voiced dialog from red vs blue characters was already in Halo 3
So even with no further knowledge of the history of the series, this seems to make it doubtful it was only popularized from 2008 onwards

Best I can find linked off wikipedia because I can't be bothered to do more than that.  This was in 2004.
Quote
There are now about 650,000 episode downloads per week from the computer servers Mr. Burns and his friends oversee. Downloads from other sites probably push the total viewers closer to a million. GameStop, the videogame retail chain, sells Red vs. Blue DVDs around the country. A showing of a number of episodes at Lincoln Center in January was sold out.

the key phrase was downloads a week
which were most likely all from the same people who were fans of the show

>850,000 downloads a week

you realize that doesn't mean that 850,000 unique downloads, right?
that is, they didn't gain a million fans every week--that's asinine

so once again, that's really a meager amount of something that apparently wasn't popularized on youtube
which it so obviously was

I like the revelation season the best

While i watched it every now again, I really started watching episode by episode with with reconstruction, and finished with revelation, the season finale was pretty awesome

First off, views are not unique fans either.  A download and a view are comparable, and neither represents a single gained fan.
Second off, you're comparing a rate to an absolute value, which is why I'm pointing to 'downloads a week'.  So you need to demonstrate not that there are several million youtube views, but that they were getting several millions of views a week during whatever time period you say youtube popularized the show.

It looks to me like the official channel you linked has gotten an average of something like 1.5 million views in total for each episode (over the past 8 years), which sounds pretty comparable to a million weekly downloads of a not quite weekly series.

doing that for each episode is silly because the show has obviously dwindled in popularity over the years, so it's not a real fair comparison
