I'd recommend Pathfinder over DnD, personally. It's also a game that's better in person, but voice chat can manage well enough. Keep in mind that it's a good idea to invest in a rulebook if you want to play or DM, otherwise you're going to end up tripping over yourself in sessions.

Some friends and I used to play it using maptool. It was pretty fun. I think I like the newest edition out of them all, the games mechanics are simpler making the games go faster.
I know a couple of people who play it, but I don't know them well.I'd be up to try it online.
