just beat the true pacifist route blind after about 9 hours of gameplay

8/10--it truly is a game that everyone should play, especially fans of rpgs

to put it another way: if i were to rate the game as a story, i'd give it a 10/10, no joke

but it's a video game, so i have to rate it as a video game--it loses points for the first half of the game not being as polished as it could be (graphically, musically, or overall design-wise), a very droll sense of humor that's incredibly hit or miss at times, and a couple of minor-ish gripes that are practically inherent to the genre and can't be helped

the only reason i've tried it just now is because the creator just dropped a free follow-up game called delta rune, and since i love free shit, i had no reason not to get it--but i figured i might as well play the original game first, if this is some kind of sequel

so if for whatever reason you haven't played this by now, try it out, it's only $10 and it has MY endorsement so what other reason do you need

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
got me to re read the steam page

eh

Excellent soundtrack, unique premise and solid game design, but overall an underwhelming game that just wasn't my thing.
honestly the only reason i love it is because i get to tell a video game character that i don't like anime, and reject her when she asks me to watch one

My favorite part is how I can be pacifist while being completely passive aggressive. I also like jokes, so my favorite character from Undertail is Sand.

okay, i wasn't sure if there was a difference

after experiencing the true ending, i genuinely have no desire to do a true reset for genocide, given the lore implications of that

still, how hard can it be lmao

Around the same difficulty as Touhou on normal difficulty. You'll die a few times, but you'll eventually learn most of the patterns. You'll spend even less time if you played bullet hell games in the past.

not sure how easy true pacifist is considered to be, but i think i died a total of 7 times

i heard genocide is more tedious than difficult

It is tedious, though I think it's intentional design. Genoside reflects powerthrough playstyle, where player basically grinds resources (such as EXP, LV etc.) through killing everything, and Undertale gives a commentary on such playstyle. It's meant to be tedious.

undyne is one of the easiest and most entertaining fights in the game lmao

you never answered my question by the way
I had to get a cracked save where she was beaten, to progress my quest to kill all these annoying fairytale creatures

if you beat her on genocide kudos to you, I play fortnight btw

so i went ahead and watched a genocide run on youtube so i could experience it in some way that wouldn't involve me having to kill everyone, and i haven't been this emotionally ravaged by art since the beginning of this year

Spoiler
there's a specific moment where the game actively calls people like me out for being too "weak" to commit to a genocide run themselves, so they spinelessly watch someone else do it, because as moral as i consider myself to be, i'm not above morbid curiosity

in other words, my decision not to play STILL mattered and was accounted for in the story

then chara showed up, and the implication that chara is going to stay within the player in "other worlds" (like, other games?) is the most disturbing thing i think i've ever seen in a game

score changed from an 8/10 to a 9/10

might just be my fourth 10/10, actually, but i really have to let it breathe for a while

so yeah i played deltarune and it was pretty cool

the whole theme of the game being "your choices don't matter" makes it the antithesis of undertale in a way, which is interesting from a narrative perspective, but i worry that it's gonna affect how complex the gameplay is (i went true pacifist, but i recently learned that it doesn't even matter if you try to kill anything in this game, so meh)

susie is obviously the best character, but she's actually so good that she kinda overshadows everyone else, and she wound up being the only character who had a lasting impression on me, everyone else is kinda stock/whatever

the writing, gags, and new party-based game mechanics are refreshing and clever as usual, and there was a lot less shitty weeb humor which i appreciate highly

the boss was a disappointment, however, and the castle section was visually the laziest thing i've ever seen

visually, undertale gets better and better as it goes along, but deltarune seems to be the opposite--when making hometown and the forest, he must have gotten tired of all the work and decided to make it easy for himself for the castle, and i guess you could chalk it up to being a "stylistic or aesthetic choice," but it really didn't work for me, and it just looked like shit

that's my only major issue though, i'm excited for chapter 2

Spoiler
i'm glad this is an alternate universe where alphys and undyne never meet, i hope they never do

chara's appearance at the end was pretty hype even if i don't understand why it happened

that on top of the fact that sans seemed more passive aggressive than he usually is (he says he fucked your mom and gives you a number that calls you an idiot baby) leads me to believe that despite the alternate universe, the game still takes place after an undertale genocide run

i didn't bother with the super boss, maybe later

lmao Susie overshadowed everyone? I disagree. She and the main character were on equal footing when it came to presence.
Spoiler
First thing you see when you start is how much of a fuckup your character is compared to Asriel if you pay attention to the room. You instantly know he isn't normal, and the fact that his eyes are hidden show that there's something dark about him (probably). Even if there wasn't, something just feels off about him. Then when he turns blue it looks like he's a cold and calculating villain.
Spoiler
A lot of characters throw in weird comments about his actions in the past, and one of his classmates asks him nervously why he visited his father at the hospital. If you talk to too many people in the end before heading home Kris turns pale and people start commenting how he looks sick.

best theme coming through

In this world it's kill or be killed your choices don't matter.
