My old Smash buddies were thinking of trying it and delving fully into nerd-ness. I want to try it out myself as well... anyone who knows the game and can give me tips?

ive played a fair amount of DnD. i also have some experience with Traveller. im not sure what ruleset our DM used but we had a really lax ruleset to allow for a pretty casual experience, and since we were all good IRL friends it was a blast. really, the experience is what you make of it. i'd recommend making sure you have someone who has DM'd before or is good at storyboarding, because its pretty important to have an outline for your adventure, or else you're just rolling dice and happening across orcs and rogues every now and then and thats just boring as hell

you could do it. just draw up a storyboard and be your own DM. it'd be boring as all hell and you'd be crazy for doing it but it wouldnt be hard

Pro tip: Get into your character! Talk and actualy like a whole different person, that is what I did. Last time I played as a Barbarian Half-Orc.. He was hilarious and would fist fight anyone who wanted to know his name. So either they chose to fight me or tricked me into giving it out.

magic is fun if you already have a huge store of cards to choose from, from a family member/friend/etc. its way too expensive to sustain unless you have a knack for winning at FNM or something

Yep, the old-school way with a board and dice. It was fun, but we had to switch DMs halfway through, so the direction was pretty inconsistent.

On a somewhat related note, http://roll20.net/ is a great site for playing d&d et al online and I'm sure you could find a campaign specifically for beginners or at least willing to take total beginners if you're interested and really have no one to play with

You can get the full rules for dnd 3.5 and pathfinder online
