Doesn't mean the games bad, the next game that followed suit was bad.
I agree with this. 4 easily set the precedent of going the more action stuff. In fact it happened in RE4 once you reach the island and it was nothing BUT action after that. They went a drastically different direction because of the meh sales the RE1 remake got, but it was on Gamecube only and that was a system that not everyone really had, so they kinda fucked themselves.

tbf it's pretty hard to balance action and horror. The second you get a gun and a decent supply of ammo, no game can be scary. After killing Jack in RE7, the rest of the game is just casual puzzles and some simple shooting.

tbf it's pretty hard to balance action and horror. The second you get a gun and a decent supply of ammo, no game can be scary. After killing Jack in RE7, the rest of the game is just casual puzzles and some simple shooting.

Re4 still managed to keep the tension high in the later levels even though you get plenty of ammo. Might not be scary in a sense, but you definitely got the same feel.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.

You actually dont get that much ammo if youre a good player because of the dynamic difficulty so it can be a tense experience throughout.

I quit the game on one playthrough when i hit the regenerator labs and had no fucking ammo, FUCK that place

Alien Isolation does a good job of that. You have a revolver, and later get flamethrowers and shit but beyond scaring off the Xeno temporarily they largely serve to attract the alien or show just how fruitless attacking it is.

Then again I'm not particularly into horrow games as a genre and largely enjoy AI based off the Alien stuff, not the horror elements so maybe it's actually pretty shit for someone who is more experienced with the genre.

I think The Evil Within is a good example of it working and not.

Naturally they wanted it to be a game that made you feel hopeless all the time, even with ammo, sometimes you do, other times you dont.

The DLC was good though, I actually felt like I was being stalked the entire time

Yeah idk, it was raised here, but getting more ammo =/= the game is suddenly not scary. You can still easily manage to scare people with psychological things, surprise attacks, and the fact only a few hits kill you. It doesn't just have to be cat and mouse.

I had a shit ton of ammo in RE3 but still got nervous as heck when the Nemesis theme played because you know he's either gonna be in the next room, or break through a wall/window soon.

getting more ammo =/= the game is suddenly not scary. You can still easily manage to scare people with psychological things, surprise attacks, and the fact only a few hits kill you.

That was just my view. Dying easily doesn't scare me, and jump scares don't count IMO. I think it helps though; in RE7 it felt like a natural character progression once I got out of the house -- I was more confident, snuck around a lot less, and didn't feel scared. I don't even think players were supposed to be scared throughout the entire game.

i used to be that guy who walked into these threads and said "speaking as someone who doesn't scare easily, i'll never understand how anyone could 'enjoy' getting scared for entertainment"

i've kind of evolved past that, because i watch and enjoy a lot of depressing movies that make me feel sad, which is also a negative feeling that i don't typically want to experience in the real world, and i also listen to a lot of depressing music, so i guess i can't use the "why would you ever want to experience a negative emotion" thing anymore

that said, i still don't scare easily, and i still don't enjoy being scared no matter what, so half the appeal of these games will forever be lost on me

i used to be that guy who walked into these threads and said "speaking as someone who doesn't scare easily, i'll never understand how anyone could 'enjoy' getting scared for entertainment"

It's not the fear that people enjoy, since we all know it's just a video game and nobody is in real danger, it's the adrenaline rush caused by anticipation and surprise.

Also the oppressive imagery and unanswered questions in games like Silent Hill appeal to some.

Maybe on professional, but normal difficulty gives you plenty of ammo without the dynamic difficulty kicking in.
