Still unsure about the addition of different champions with their own abilities, but I'm sure that'll be disabled in competitive modes. Game looks great aside from that. So go sign up for the Beta.

Same thing as with the Champions. I think it's pointless and don't see it being necessary, but I have little to no doubts that they're going to allow major tweaking of server and user settings. Competitive Quake is what made the game so popular, so I couldn't imagine them not having "Classic" mode without abilities, wall jumps and these shard drops.

So they're not for me, but I'm not entirely against it either. One of Quake's biggest issues was accessibility. The game still has one of the highest skill ceilings and best competitive side of any game I've ever played or watched. We're almost 20 years after Quake 3's release and the game still has an active competitive scene focused entirely around movement and getting from point A to point B as fast as possible. At the point that I was already a serious player / veteran, I still ended up putting in hours and hours just to get a single jump down, which is pretty damn crazy for any game.

And while this gave the games tremendous longevity and competitive potential, it also made it very daunting and inaccessible for newcomers. You start playing and find yourself in a lightning fast and highly tactical game that requires hours of practice just to reach the level of "novice" at something as simple as basic movement. Add onto that item timing, map control, weapon utilization, trick jumps and so forth, and you'll have a mediocre player who is somewhat familiar with the game stomp on a beginner 40-0. There's no low level. You either play with bots by yourself or get slaughtered in public by real people until you get decent enough. It's Dark Souls' git gud but a hundred times worse.

This is very off putting and turned a lot of people away because of how difficult and "hardcore" the games were. And ultimately, that's what kills a game and limits the playerbase to a dwindling number of good and amazing players who end up moving on to other games that have come out since Quake. So in that sense, I'm not against these new features. As long as they keep them out of hardcore or classic modes, I think they can do much to level the playing field and make it easier for new players to enjoy and stick with the game.

And kind of related, Reflex released today.

A great Quake-inspired Arena FPS. Might play it in the near future although I'm not the biggest fan of CPM movement.

NK was here. Everything I post is dead serious, no jokes.
I came here from b.net after a few Floods invited me. None of them post on either b.net nor here anymore, which is sad. I was still active on b.net until for some bizarre reason, b.net admins locked out people who have not played Destiny. Even if you wanted to post on the offtopic section. After that, I fully moved here and have not returned to b.net since.
I signed up for the Beta even though its a PC exclusive.
Maybe it has Intel HD mode?

It was? I've been keeping up with QC news pretty closely and never heard that before. I can't find a single source on this from before PAX and a lot of major game outlets are only jumping on it now, so I'm pretty sure this is big news.

Summary of new updates:

- Quake Champions will be free to play. You'll get the entire game but only one Champion if you remain F2P.
- Other Champions are either purchasable all together with real money or through in-game currency called Favor.
- Favor will be easy to obtain making it so that it doesn't feel like you're renting Champions but just cycling through them.
- Heavy user customization will be present, allowing you to edit your characters in detail.
- Favor can also be used to play Rune Challenges which give you loot boxes unlocking common, uncommon, rare and epic cosmetic items and skins (think CS:GO and Overwatch).
- Challenges and unlocks for gameplay related "achievements" will also be present.
- Console releases are not entirely ruled out.
- Tiered matchmaking makes a return so that new players can be paired up with others of similar skill.
- Release set for somewhere in 2017.

All good news. The one thing I'm still waiting on is an official confirmation of a classic mode. Other than that, this is all really nice. I wouldn't have minded paying full price for this game, but this business model and system of unlocks sounds like it'll draw in big crowds and new players. Looking forward to it.

If it's anything like the previous Quake games, you'll have extreme customization options and will be able to turn down the graphics to the absolute minimum. You could legit make Quake Live look like this (and even worse) by changing the graphical settings.

Still, do you have any source confirming that this was known from before PAX? I can't find anything. For months, all I've heard were rumors and reports that it wouldn't be a full $60 game but rather like $40. heard nothing about it F2P until a few days ago, and I still frequent the biggest Quake forums on the internet. Quake Live was F2P with a pro subscription model back in the day, but I've never heard anything like that about Quake Champions.

Nah, it doesn't matter at all. I'm just skeptical as Quake Champions being F2P is such major news that I could not see it fly under the radar like this. I was in a Quake stream on Twitch the day it was shown at PAX and this was the big topic of discussion even among some of the most well known veterans of the Quake community. The fact that Esreality (probably the biggest Quake forum/site on the entire internet) only just did an article on it being F2P two days ago is giving me the impression that it is nearly impossible that this was known before PAX, as the people on there live and breathe Quake and have every new bit of information up and running the second it gets out to the public. But yeah, it doesn't matter.

The hype is fucking real. Reports from veteran players and news outlets all agree that it plays and feels exactly like a proper Quake game despite the addition of the Champions. The skills don't do much to change the classic experience and give a refreshing change that even pros are welcoming. I imagine you'll be able to restrict settings as to only allow certain Champions or settings for competitive, which will be great.

Also, new footage shows off more of the great customization. The cosmetics go far beyond just weapon colors and such, but introduce entire skins and models from previous games. For example, the classic Quake 1 rocket launcher is an unlockable in the game.

Looks like I really gotta get my PC ready by the game this game come out later in 2017.

I'll be brief.

I've played several UT games and enjoyed them all. They're great and fun arena shooters. Yet still, Quake has always been my favorite. UT's movement just doesn't do it for me. It's much slower and feels clunky when compared to Quake which is considerably faster, smoother and more varied (<3 strafe jumping). While UT has more weapons that are typically in play, many of them come across as gimmicky and their secondary fire is pretty pointless in my opinion. Quake's weapons are the most balanced out of any game I've ever played. The core guns check all the right boxes and just work so well. You have the holy trinity of Rocket Launcher, Lightning Gun and Railgun in combination with the Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, Gauntlet, Machine Gun and Plasma Rifle. Straightforward, simple and oh so good. There was an argument to be made that UT had the better and more varied maps back in the day, but with community creations and updates (see Quake Live) that no longer holds up. Quake also had the better competitive scene after the early 2000's with its duel game mode dominating many tournaments, while UT pretty much died completely. Quake, in my opinion, is faster and more enjoyable to play and watch. UT is good, but Quake is king.

The new UT looks pretty good, but nothing has happened in ages. I played the pre-alpha (as far as my laptop let me) and it was good but nothing special. The fact that it's crowdsourced and heavily reliant on a community which has (or soon will have) access to Quake Live, Quake Champions, Reflex, Warsow, Diabotical and so on has me more than just a little skeptical about how it's going to turn out. "Yeah everything is open source and we're not doing anything new without community consensus on our forums" may seem pretty sweet at first sight, but can be very fickle, slow and just terrible. Many of these people are extreme traditionalists. Imagine if the Quake community would have had to agree on and support things like in-game currency, skins, unlocks, challenges and Champions? Yet id made the call and pushed through and now pretty much everyone is coming around and loving it. I hope it succeeds because the more competitive arena shooters drawing attention the better, but I have my doubts. The fact that it's been in pre-alpha for almost 3 years now and that it's going to be entirely F2P with a weird thing of community mods making money or whatever doesn't inspire much confidence either...

Quake > All, it seems.

Yeah the character movement moves a little too slow in UT, they apparently had a way to move quickly by bunny slide hopping, but I think they removed it (unless they made it simpler to do) I think I disagree on the secondary fire, I think they give the weapons and alternative uses that one might find useful like shooting grenades with the flak cannon if an enemy is hiding behind a wall, or if you want to bait an opponent to chase you so use the secondary fire for the bio-rifle to place a trap etc. etc. It sucks how slow the new Unreal Tournament content is being released, and it doesn't help that the game's playerbase is dwindling to mere hundreds.
