as soon as she evolves, yeah

boosting friendship is so slow in gen 2, though, with no good ways to farm it

at least in crystal, they made it so happiness gained via level up is doubled if you're training in the area where you first met, so i've been taking note of that (fortunately, both the eggs hatched while in the forest)

gonna try something unorthodox

i used to not fear whitney as much as the average person, but since i experienced a literal full-team wipe against her in my silverlocke, i'm not gonna fuck around with her anymore

in gold/silver, you had a 60% chance of finding a nidoran of either gender on route 35, just north of goldenrod city, which learns double kick, making it useful in-theory vs. whitney (especially if you find a male one)

but in crystal, this route's encounter table was overhauled, and now you can only find nidoran in national park

HOWEVER, according to bulbapedia, when a yanma outbreak occurs in crystal, not only does this make yanma easier to find, it also seems to revert the route's encounter table back to how it used to be in gold/silver—which, assuming this isn't an error on bulbapedia's part, makes it possible to find nidoran on the route again

so as i train cleffa, i'm just riding around, waiting for bug catcher arnie to call me about a yanma outbreak

it's either that, or i try to go for the 10% abra encounter (for the machop trade)

if it doesn't work and bulbapedia is inaccurate, then at least i'll have done it for science

all right, so i'm not sure what just happened tbh

after i removed all of my other contacts to ensure that arnie calls me as much as possible to let me know about yanma outbreaks, he finally does it

so i rush over there, and because i was training my venonat at the time, i decided to use venonat's sweet scent to get the encounter, just for a bit of fun or something, not thinking it would actually make any real difference

my encounter wound up being an abra, which meant either of two things:
1. bulbapedia is wrong, and yanma outbreaks in crystal do not revert the route's encounter table back to g/s
2. using sweet scent to get the encounter was a mistake, because it may have prematurely ended the outbreak

so i searched and searched for yanma for about the normal duration of an outbreak, which is 30 real-time minutes

never found one, so my running hypothesis atm is that using sweet scent like a retard actually fucks everything up, but the only way for me to verify this is to test it once again (meaning i have to wait for another outbreak)

but i mean, whatever, at least i got a pretty solid encounter out of it

fortunately, since i lead with gastly, i was able to use mean look to prevent it from teleporting away, making it the cleanest and most efficient abra capture i've ever had

do i trade it for a machop, though? i know i said earlier that i wasn't going to do that, but now that i actually have one, and i don't really have any other offensive options against whitney, i'm actually starting to consider that as an option

i think i might just go ahead and trade the abra, honestly

after what happened with whitney last time, it'll be extremely satisfying to just one-shot everything with machop

i won't be entirely missing out on a powerful psychic-type, either, since i plan on evolving the eevee into an espeon

to follow up on my last few posts: it turns out that i actually discovered a glitch

i use the word "discovered" because, as far as i'm able to tell, this glitch has yet to be documented on bulbapedia, serebii, or anywhere else, and as soon as i'm able to provide evidence for it, i intend to edit some articles over there

it has to do with the move sweet scent being used outside of battle to produce an encounter during an outbreak

long-story short: during an outbreak, if you decide to use sweet scent outside of battle rather than just walking through the tall grass like normal, the outbreak will end prematurely and you won't get the thing you're looking for

i was able to confirm this after getting arnie to alert me of a second yanma outbreak, WITHOUT using sweet scent that time, after noticing that something seemed a little "off" about the first one

this also confirms that crystal's encounter tables revert back to gold/silver tables during outbreaks, which is so fucking bizarre to me

not sure if the glitch happens anywhere outside of Crystal VC, but given how faithful these ports have been to the original games, it seems safe enough to say that it applies across the board for all gen 2 games on all platforms

at least it wound up working out for me in the end, since i traded the abra i found for a machop and slaughtered the shit out of whitney with it

currently about to fight morty

Crystal progress:

Training to fight Clair. Four deaths total.

The squad:

More than six, because I simply can't decide on who should be mainstays. Bayleef, Graveler, and Noctowl are the earliest three that I use the most consistently, but everyone else is in constant flux and all have their own niche roles on the team, which is kinda cool. It's rare that I have this much variety, especially in Gen II of all things.

Bayleef should be evolving shortly, which will be hype. It's rare for my starter to make it this far, and for it to be the weakest starter in the entire series is pretty exciting for me.

I ban trading with anyone who isn't an NPC for my nuzlockes, so Machoke and Graveler won't be fully evolved at any point in the run. As such, they'll probably be retired soon, unless I need them for Strength.

i could evolve Clefairy and Growlithe, but they both learn some of their best moves at level 53 and level 50, respectively, so they'll be stuck this way for awhile yet unfortunately.

In the box, I have Suicune, Voltorb, Poliwhirl, Goldeen, Tentacool, Chinchou, Scyther, Pidgey, Magikarp, Zubat, and Spearow, and then I have two Aipom in the daycare, male and female, who I haven't checked up on at all, and I won't until just before the Elite 4 to see how many levels they've gained. They had an Egg, but I won't hatch it until the run is over, as per the nuzlocke rules.

RIP:

Wooper died early on during the second rival fight after sustaining a burn from Ember and a critical hit Tackle from his Quilava. Certainly avoidable, but definitely the most RNG-based death of the run so far.

Haunter died because I didn't expect Eusine to fight me randomly, and I wasn't prepared for his team. He sent out an Electrode, which I automatically assumed would use Self-destruct, so I sent out Haunter to nullify it. But it used Thunder instead, despite being level 25 or something. Definitely a lapse of judgment, since I could've switched for Graveler instead, who would've been able to tank a Self-destruct OR an Electric-type move, but I just panicked.

Ariados both died during the Team Rocket Radio Tower raid in ways that are foggy to me right now. It's one of the more brutal sections of the game, so someone was bound to die anyway.

In terms of encounters, I'm still saving Mt. Mortar for Tyrogue again.

I won't play Gen III at all until they re-release them on VC tbh, unless it doesn't seem like they're going to.

As for Gen IV, I definitely need to refresh myself with that (despite it being my least favorite gen and all).

I'm still kinda holding out for GBA VC on Switch, since Wii U had it. I just really wanna play it since it's my favourite game of the series and it's been years since I've sat down to play it. I've also recently played Gen 1 and 2 (aside from kanto) so it seems fitting.

8 badges. Clefairy was able to hold her own against Clair, slaying all three Dragonair with Blizzard (with the help of +3 evasion from Minimize), but eventually fell to Kingdra's Surf after I took a stupid and unnecessary gamble.

Got the ExtremeSpeed Dratini, though, so that's pretty dope. I told myself earlier I was only going to train a Dratini if I managed to get one with the move, so I guess I'm training a Dratini now.

It wouldn't be a Verbatim nuzlocke if some stupid shit didn't happen at some point.

So the other day, I was making my way up to Victory Road, but not before getting my penultimate encounter for the Johto region, not counting Mt. Silver: Route 26. After clearing the route of all its trainers, this is the last area in the game where I'm able to get a Pineco. Not only have I never used this thing, I've never even seen it a single time in a Gen II game, and this was my last chance to find one.

Unsurprisingly, I found a Hoothoot instead. Mildly vexed, I close the 3DS, intending to play some more of it later.

So I pick it up and turn it back on to discover that I forgot to save. I was back in the Dragon's Den where the last thing I did was get the Extreme Speed Dratini, and now I have to re-fight every single trainer on Route 26 again. Not devastating, but still kind of annoying.

So, I'm trying to clear the route as fast as possible, not thinking too hard about what I'm doing. Suddenly, my Kingler wound up biting the dust after making a retarded and rushed decision that I wouldn't have made at all if I were focusing.

I'm wondering if I should count this death. I literally already cleared this route already, and I was just making up for lost progress. But at the same time, all of this shit was easily preventable and is 100% my fault. So maybe I should count it. But technically, if I count the death, then maybe I should also give myself a second chance at Pineco, too. I'm not going to do that, though. I just kinda wish this didn't happen, because no matter what choice I make, it's going to make me feel guilty.

So, here's my compromise:

1.) I'm gonna keep Kingler. The death doesn't count because I cleared this area already.
2.) I'm banning Kingler from the Elite 4. So, if I want to use him again during this run, I have to win.
3.) No extra Pineco attempt.
4.) This is the only time I'm ever allowing anything like this to happen again.

Suicune will have to replace Kingler for the time being. It's way stronger anyway, and I'm normally not cool with using legendaries, but given that Suicune was the first legendary I ever caught, and the first thing I ever used a Master Ball on, there's sentimental purpose to using it, too.

So, I was grinding just before Victory Road when I found this as I was training up my Noctowl:

Female, went with the two-word name "No Sound" because of her dex entry.

As much as I wanna use her, I can't quite replace Clocks, the Noctowl that I'm currently using. Clocks has been on the party since day 1 of the challenge, and I found him on a route that I normally lose out on, because of the whole lack of Poké Balls thing. So yeah, not right now. Still a cool catch, though. This is the generation where shinies actually MEANT something.

I'll definitely use her during Kanto.

shiny odds increase for every SOS encounter, so it was essentially guaranteed to happen at some point

The Cutiefy was actually just one of the random encounters, not an SOS.
Meanwhile i'm still looking for that Salamance.

All right, finally ready I think. Here's the gang:

Spoiler

I'm really happy I was able to take Meganium all the way to the end, given Chikorita's reputation as the weakest starter ever. With the highest overall stats on the team, even above Suicune's, he's really made a name for himself.

Graveler's been with me since Dark Cave, pre-Falkner, and has carried me through over half of the gyms in the game. Though she'll never be a Golem, and has the lowest stats on the team as a result, I still fully expect her to hold her own.

Noctowl has been on the team even longer, and I was lucky enough to get an encounterless Route 30 when I had the opportunity to catch him. He's not the strongest member of the team by any means, but he's been flying my ass all over the region for quite awhile, and he's very reliable.

Arcanine wasn't actually meant to be on the A-Team at all, and I only trained her up (along with Ariados (RIP) and Kingler, who is currently in limbo) so that I could use something for the Battle Tower. I never wound up going to the Battle Tower, though, but she wound up proving herself to me anyway, especially after some crucial members died.

Espeon didn't evolve until very late into the playthrough, so I was never able to get a read on his personality or anything, but he's absurdly powerful and I expect him to fuck shit up with Psychic.

Suicune is Suicune. Normally, I wouldn't be using a legendary at all, but Suicune isn't horribly overpowered anyway, and he's just standing in for Kingler until I'm able to use him again. I spent the rest of my life savings in the game on a Blizzard TM just to make him my dragon slayer, and the rest of his movepool is surprisingly shallow.

All right, hopefully no one dies.

Came out on top, but lost my Graveler to Karen's Houndoom. I thought she'd be able to withstand a Flamethrower, even during a Sunny Day boost, but I was woefully incorrect.

Noctowl had a cool moment during the fight, though. After taking out a couple Pokémon on her team, he was down to about 10% of his HP. Maybe less. She sends out her Murkrow, and to give him a break, I decided to switch out—but by the time it crossed my mind that she might use Pursuit, it was already too late. He took the hit, and lived with just 1% left. It was dope.

Lance was a joke with Suicune around. He landed every Blizzard, missing only once, and tanked several Hyper Beams. Normally, I'd feel guilty about making the final fight so easy, but this has been a pretty special run for me, so I don't feel too bad about it.

After putting Graveler to rest, I flew to Goldenrod City to pick up my reward—the GS Ball, the key item needed to catch Celebi at the Ilex Forest Shrine. In order to use it, though, I first had to show it to Kurt, who examines it for a day before giving it back to you (or, hopefully, just after midnight).

This is something that means a whole lot to me, because the shrine at the Ilex Forest has mystified me for fifteen years. When I watched the fourth Pokémon movie, I knew Celebi was waiting at that shrine, but I just couldn't figure out how to make it appear. I tried so many different methods, from catching a bunch of Unown spelling C-E-L-E-B-I and checking the shrine, to glitching the game to find a hidden "Teru-Sama" item that was meant to represent the GS Ball, and many other things.

Nothing ever worked, and by the time Bulbapedia was a robust website, it was there that I discovered that Celebi, like Mew, was an "event" Pokémon—but unlike Mew, it was never distributed in America. Ever. Only in Japan.

There is a way to catch Celebi using a series of strange glitches that I've never tried before, and the reason I never tried it is mostly because 1.) I stopped caring, and 2.) I just wanted to get a Celebi legitimately. It's my favorite mythical Pokémon, and I really don't wanna have to break the game to get one.

Now I don't have to. Fifteen years of having this shrine do absolutely nothing for me, and it's about to finally do something for me in about 10 minutes. Pretty cool shit.

Oh, also, I checked back with the two Aipom I dropped in the daycare at the beginning of the playthrough, and they're both level 55 now.
