I'm back to playing Yellow on the VC after a long spurt of gen 6 madness, and boy does it feel like a whole different beast. I have a mental list of things I've noticed that I'm glad they changed, but there's probably stuff that was actually better.
-Pokeballs actually missing the Pokemon when thrown. WTH? I was trying to catch Chansey in Safari and about 5 balls in a row all missed!
-Having to manually change PC boxes, so that you wouldn't be told that you are unable to catch a Pokemon because the box is full. Seriously, so much frustration from this!
-Having to select HMs manually. Okay just a minor one this, but still.
-Do the badges ACTUALLY change your stats?
-Weird selection of TMs. I can't remember all of them from my playthrough but a few of them had me scratching my head.
-On route 21 there's a swimmer trainer that's... actually a Cue Ball! Is Gen 1 the only gen to feature a swimming trainer that isn't actually a swimmer class?
That's just a few of mine, playing Gen 1 after the others feels... weird. In a weird way, heh.
Do you miss any of the early or odd design choices from Gen 1?

Thank god the bag no longer works like it does in Gen 1.

But no the badges don't change your stats, but like in all games (As far as i'm aware of) Badges serve to prevent twinking  in that over-leveled traded Pokemon have a high chance of strait up ignoring you without the proper badge.

In one playthrough I did of Pearl where an ingame traded chattot grew so fast that it outleveled my currernt badge and screwed me over plenty.

I've really warmed up to the Gen 7 starters, hell even Popplio's line is kind of appealing. They're probably the best set of starters next to Gen 3, appearance wise.

But the gym leaders tell me the badges raise stats

DO THEY LIE

huh apparently they do raise stats

Quote
Stat boost
In Generations I-III, some Badges boost a certain stat or stats of the player's Pokémon. This boost is applied only in internal battles, not link battles. In Generations I and II, the stat or stats are increased by 12.5%; in Generation III, the stat or stats are increased by 10%. This boost does not exist from Generation IV onward.
In Generation I, this boost is reapplied whenever the player's Pokémon's stats are raised or lowered, allowing boosts to be stacked (this stacking effect is lost if the Pokémon levels up). In Generation II, if the attack is a critical hit and the attacker's used offensive stat stage is less than or equal to the opponent's defensive stat stage, all Badge boosts are ignored.

Verb is lurking and sent me this.

All right, feel free to share this PM in the thread to spread the knowledge:

It's a common misconception that they lie, but actually, as it turns out, badges do raise your stats in earlier generations. It just works in a really weird and esoteric fashion that's never really explained or noticed in the game. Naturally, they only work in single player battles (ie. not link battles), and they boost their corresponding stat by 12.5%.

Brock's badge boosts Attack, and Blaine's badge boosts Special, but Surge and Koga lie to you--they both say that their badges increase Speed and Defense, respectively, but due to a bug, they got each other mixed up. So, Surge's badge boosts Defense and Koga's badge boosts Speed.

Here's where it gets weird: In Gen I specifically, the badge boosts are re-applied for every time your Pokémon's stats are raised or lowered. This is considered a bug, because it doesn't happen at all in Gen II onward. So, if you have all the stat-boosting badges, and your Pokémon gets hit by an attack like Screech, every badge boost you have gets re-applied to your active Pokémon--but I'm not sure if this effect is additive or multiplicative. I assume it's multiplicative--meaning a 12.5% boost becomes a 18.75% boost--but I could be totally wrong.

Either way, this effect also applies when you use X items, like X Speed or X Special, making X items super broken in Gen I. The stacking effect gets reset when your Pokémon levels up, though.

I think badge boosts in general stopped being a thing in Gen IV, so none of this nonsense is present anymore.

you shouldn't need a foreign ditto, it normally takes about 150-200 hatches to get a shiny rowlet with a normal ditto.
Or just wait until you get a shiny charm.

Don't you need to Masuda Method for the swap method?
