Funny you should ask—I normally go with a special theme, like Greek Gods or something, but this time, I decided to just pull them straight from the noggin, just to force myself to be creative.

Since I caught Scyther in this game's equivalent of the Safari Zone, it made me think of how someone like Steve Irwin would react to seeing one in the outback. I almost named her "Crikey," but then when I realized she was female, I went with Sheila instead. Aussie slang is fun.

Lanturn is named Peckham after "Peckhamian mimicry," the scientific term for an angler fish's method of predation. Probably the name I'm least proud of on my A-team, but it's grown on me.

When I caught Alkali, she must have used Poison Sting on me six or seven times before I was able to find a safe way to weaken her. She never poisoned me a single time. When a bee sting's venom is not acidic, it's alkali—so I figured that would make a pretty good name.

Rosalie is named after Rosa Bonheur, a French animalière (an artist who paints animals and animal behaviors, just like a Smeargle). When naming Pokémon after real people, I typically use their surnames—but in this case, "Bonheur" happens to sound a lot like "boner," even when pronounced properly. So I just went with her birth name instead. It was too perfect, otherwise.

Skarmory is named Narayan, because I was listening to The Prodigy at the time, and it seemed quite fitting. In Hinduism, Narayana is basically the god of gods.

Excuse me, I'm full of dog poison
So, I had this idea prior to challenging the Elite 4 to try to make this run more interesting for Kanto, but since the Time Capsule doesn't actually work the way I hoped it would, I'm gonna save it for when Pokémon Crystal comes out instead.

Basically, upon reaching Vermilion City, a new extension to the rules would be added that would allow for alternative encounters involving the Time Capsule. In these games, it's possible to send Pokémon from the first generation over to the second—you just need to trade over something that actually existed during Gen I, and you could carry your team from Red, Blue, or Yellow over to the next gen.

In doing this, the Gen I Pokémon you carry over may be carrying some kind of rare or valuable item that cannot be obtained through any other means. Somehow, I never took much advantage of this feature as a kid, even though I would've had a lot of fun with it—so I came up with this idea.

Basically, after beating the Elite 4, my Silver challenge would be put on hold. Then, I would start a new challenge with the same exact ruleset on a fresh Pokémon Yellow file (or Red, or Blue. Doesn't really matter). Once I've completed that Yellow challenge, I could resume playing Silver and make my way through Kanto.

This is where the rule extension comes in. Basically, for every area in Silver's Kanto that has a parallel in Yellow's Kanto, I can either walk around in the grass and encounter something normally, OR, alternatively, I can invoke Time Capsule Clause.

This is a clause that allows me, for every new area, to trade with my previously completed Pokémon Yellow file. This will serve as my one encounter, but the interesting thing is this—the only thing I'm allowed to trade is the Pokémon I found on that specific route in my previous file. So, for example—if, in my Yellow nuzlocke, I found a Magnemite on Route 9, I can THEN sacrifice my one encounter on Route 9 in my Silver nuzlocke, once I actually reach that route. From there, I won't be able to get anything else as normal.

It's totally fair, too, since Time Capsule trades are indeed trades—I'm not gaining Pokémon through this method. I'm losing one and then gaining one. This idea not only promotes variety, but also gives me an opportunity to use a feature I overlooked as a kid, and potentially use some Pokémon I otherwise would never be able to in a nuzlocke, like Golem, Alakazam, Machamp, and Gengar, because I don't typically allow trade evolutions.

This was a great idea, and I was prepared to do it immediately after beating the Elite 4—but unfortunately, it hinged upon the idea that I only needed one 3DS with both Yellow and Silver on it to actually use the Time Capsule. As it turns out, you do in fact need two 3DSs with two separately-purchased copies of the two games loaded onto them.

That's not how it was advertised at all, but whatever.

I'm such a shill for Pokémon anyway, that when Crystal comes out, I'll probably end up buying another 3DS. I kinda want a new one anyway, and I'll purchase Crystal on that machine while using my Yellow file on my old device. I'm making this happen, but it's just a matter of time before the game actually comes out.

Bruh, they make a 2ds that flips now

That said, the less likely I am to use a Pokémon, the less creative I care to be.

I have a Goldeen that I named Monty for basically no reason.

The last Pokémon I caught, Staryu, is named Decarabia, after my favorite Shin Megami Tensei demon.

I just come up with random names for my pokemon unless I can think of a good joke, like in Sun I named my Alolan Marowak 'Numbskull' 'cause it's a ghost, and my Wimpod was called Greg because I think that's the main character from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.

Crunch time for the squad. For Blue, I'm gonna try to bring everyone up to level 55, or at least 54.

To help Shuckie stall with Toxic, I taught Protect to Sheila, Alkali, and Narayan. This will also help them scout out dangerous moves, and it's just a cool move to have in general. I also replaced Sheila's Slash with Return.

Looking over some options in the box in case shit hits the fan. Kurama is still on deck should anything horrible happen, but I really hope it doesn't come to that, given how frail he is. If it does, I'll have to teach moves like Sunny Day and Fire Blast, as well as teach Agility to Rosalie, forgoing Substitute (which would suck major ass).

I haven't forgotten about December, Verbette, Mr. Green, or the others either. Just trying to carefully weigh the options.

Worst comes to worst, I have a Snorlax (strongest non-legendary in the game).

If I totally wipe to Blue or Red, though, that'll be curtains for the run. I wouldn't wanna continue after that.

Shuckie the Shuckle     - 55 - 131.3333333333333
Narayan the Skarmory    - 55 - 124.6666666666667
Alkali the Beedrill     - 55 - 117
Rosalie the Smeargle    - 55 -  85.83333333333333

I'm ready for Blue now, I think.

I checked Sheila's and Narayan's Hidden Power—they have Ghost and Psychic, respectively. Not very helpful; I got rid of them immediately. On Alkali, I replaced Focus Energy with Return. I think Focus Energy has far outlived its usefulness at this point.

Peckham wanted to learn Hydro Pump at one point, but I made the tough decision to decline it. Surf isn't quite as strong, but it still gets a rain boost on top of Mystic Water, and it's perfectly accurate as well. Accuracy is something I value a whole lot.

Rosalie will hopefully not see any action whatsoever, but I'm having her hold Leftovers just in case.

This is slightly off topic, but it still applies to Pokemon. What event Pokemon do you guys have? The last Pokemon game I played extensively before taking a seven year break was Soulsilver, which remains my favorite game. All of my favorites and event Pokemon are on that game.

Recently I have been getting back into Pokemon with Omega Ruby, and I have a copy of Black to use to get my Pokemon into the Bank/transporter.

Anyway, as for what even Pokemon I have, I have a Japanese Mew I got at the 2010 championship event in Arlington. I also have a shiny event Umbreon, and a 2010 Event Celebi. The latter event involved Celebi taking you back in time to the period in-between R&B and G&S, where you battle an in-hiding Giovanni.

I also have a shiny Mightyena and Celebi, but I have no idea how I obtained those.

Edit:
Mew

Celebi

Umbreon

Has Crystal even been hinted at/confirmed?
https://daily.pokecommunity.com/2017/09/22/what-happened-to-pokemon-crystals-eshop-release/
"Patches used to allow Virtual Console to work with Crystal have been found in the app code for the Virtual Console versions of Gold and Silver, suggesting that the release of Crystal is imminent:"

beyond that, not really—i'd say the writing's on the wall, but mostly, i'm just going off the fact that there's very little reason for them not to release it eventually, and i'd be very surprised if they never did

If this is true I am definitely interested. I never played Crystal.

Still training for Red. I never stopped; this is just how long it takes.

I realized I never talked about the Blue fight. I don't entirely remember how it went down, but it was pretty intense. Just like in the championship fight against Lance, everyone on the team had their moment.

Shuckie died during the fight, though, which I'm still pretty bummed about. I got myself in a situation where I basically had to sacrifice Shuckie to save the rest of the team. Blue had his Gyarados, and it was clearly about to use Hydro Pump, and one of my guys just had to take the hit. I prayed for a miss, but alas, Shuckie got blasted.

That leaves four champions: Scyther, Lanturn, Skarmory, Beedrill.

Smeargle is still in, but things have changed in terms of her strategy. I had her all prepared with these crazy moves like Spore and Belly Drum, and all I needed left to complete the set was Baton Pass.

Unfortunately, in a nuzlocke, that's a no go. By using the typical method, where I find a wild Smeargle and use Baton Pass on it, the Smeargle will always fail to Sketch the move. The only way I can prevent it from failing is to get my own Baton Pass to fail somehow.

The only way to get Baton Pass to fail is if you only have one usable Pokémon in your party. Keyword "usable."

If Smeargle were fainted, I could get it to work. But as per the rules of a nuzlocke, if a Pokémon ever faints, it's dead.

So, yeah, that entire plan I've been formulating for Smeargle since I first caught her was all for nothing.

I tried looking for something, ANYTHING that Smeargle could do to be somewhat useful for the Red fight. All of the best moves it could possibly learn that I haven't tried before: Spikes, Lock-on, Self-destruct. None of these can be found in the wild. Even the Substitute idea fell flat on its face, because despite the fact that I did manage to catch Mr. Mime (the only thing in the game that actually learns Substitute naturally), I failed to realize that he's at too high of a level. I think they learn Sub at level 20 or something, but can only be found in the wild somewhere in the 30s. You basically have to breed for it.

All I want to do is use a Smeargle, but the game has done quite literally everything in its power to prevent me from using it.

In a fit of frustration and desperation, I decided to make an extremely rash decision: I was gonna have Smeargle learn Guillotine from a Krabby.

This is extremely dangerous for obvious reasons. Wild Krabby (or Kingler) can be fished for with a Super Rod at level 40, and in their moveset, they will have Guillotine (a move that will instantly kill Smeargle if she gets hit by it).

To minimize chances of death, I took my second Gastly along (the one I caught in Tin Tower). Since she's immune to Guillotine, I was gonna use her to reduce Guillotine's PP. That way, Smeargle only has to dodge a single Guillotine instead of the two she would have otherwise (since Sketch only has one PP itself).

This Gastly ended up dying because I did something stupid. We've come full circle, at least. Twenty deaths; a full box of deceased warriors. The first death of the run was a Gastly, too.

RIP:

I later discovered that one-hit KO moves in this game work almost the same as they did in Gen I. Basically, there was no actual chance for Smeargle to die. But still, I TOTALLY though I was risking poor Smeargle's life there, completely unnecessarily. This run has done things to me.

There's no telling when I'll be finished training, but I don't particularly enjoy the grind. It might even be until fucking summer.

Oh, and if you're wondering who I replaced Shuckle with, I brought back Kurama the Vulpix. I still can't use a Fire Stone on him, which fucking sucks fat dick, but I don't know who else to use, really. I'll let him take out his frustration with me against Red.

Lastly, my final encounters of the game are:
Route 28 - Tangela (which ran away, not that I cared to have it).
Mt. Silver - another Donphan.

I'm playing Gold from the eshop. I just got to Ecruteak. From looking it up, it seems you get a Moon Stone from your mum shopping, and a trainer on one of the routes phones you if she finds a Leaf Stone?

I just don't wanna be stuck with a Nidorino and a Weepinbell for most of the game.

got some bad news for you: trainers calling and giving you items is only a thing in crystal

in gold and silver, the only way to get the elemental stones is via bill's grandfather in kanto

he gives them to you in a set order, and you only get one of each per game

it's probably of the worst thing about the games tbh

Yep. Either from her, or the one sitting around in Tohjo Falls, which is accessible as soon as you get Surf.

Since you're in Ecruteak, it looks like you'll be able to get your hands on that very soon.

Right, I get that after beating Morty I think

Hmmmmm should be fine then.

I'm trying to keep a somewhat balanced team that doesn't involve me just sweeping both regions with Feraligatr, which is what happened last time.

Currently my team is:
-Afrika (Croconaw)  - Because Toto = Africa, duh. Though I changed it to Afrika at Goldenrod because it sounded more exotic.

-Dweed (Weepinbell) - At work experience years ago, somebody had graffitied D'weed onto a bustop and it's always stuck with me. Bellsprout looks like a weed, so yeah.

-Garuda (Pidgeotto) -Some kind of ancient flying demon that sounded cool, really struggled with naming my Pidgey. Originally I named it Nevada but I didn't want Africa AND Nevada.

-Marko (Nidorino) - Nidoking is part Ground. Ground is like sand. There's a Spider-Man villain named Sandman. His surname is Marko.  Makes sense.

-Koko (Eevee) - It sounded cute and doesn't seem to not-fit with any of the possible evolutions

Yeah I occasionally reach pretty far with nicknames lmao

I actually didn't start nicknaming my Pokémon until I started doing nuzlockes exclusively, to be honest, and I made that decision some time after Gen V. I did a little bit when I first started, but all my names were awful, poorly spelled, and based on a five-year-old's spur-of-the-moment vocabulary.

One time, I caught a Shellder, which I had never seen before, so I assumed that it was rare. When I caught it, I decided to name it "Lucky," but since I was five and didn't know how to spell, "Locke" was its name instead.

I've always had a habit of reserving good names for shinies, though. My first shiny ever was a Rattata that I found after years and years of playing Gen II (though, I don't even think Gen IV was out at the time). I gave him a name that I'm still pretty proud of to this day: Sterling, based on his "sterling silver" color palette (which doesn't make much sense anymore, since shiny Rattata look more greyish green now), the fact that I found him in Pokémon Silver, and the fact that the word means "something of high value." It was a perfect fit.

This eventually came full circle in Gen VII, when my first shiny was an Alolan Raticate. I had a pretty fun naming theme at the time (Hanna-Barbera cartoons), so I named her Chérie from Tom & Jerry, who was Jerry's love interest for one episode. It also matched her black cherry color palette.

When Gen IV was still fresh, I found a shiny Geodude out in the wild, which had been my fifth shiny in general. I named it Ragnarok, which was a term I picked up when I was looking up synonyms for "apocalypse" one day, and the "rock" pun seemed to fit.

He never became a Golem, though. Even though I had friends who played Diamond & Pearl, I have weird opinions on how trade evolutions should work. I don't like the idea of trading back after something evolves, because I always felt like that defeated the whole purpose of a trade.

During Gen V, I got REALLY into competitive battling on Showdown, so I kinda stopped playing Pokémon casually until they nerfed weather teams in Gen VI. When OR/AS came out, I tried to make rain teams great again with Mega Swampert, who I named Balrog (after the Street Fighter character), who I still use in my competitive team to this day. I don't take competitive battling as seriously anymore, though. Weather may have been stupidly OP, but it made it fun. Now, shit kinda sucks.

My shiny Hariyama in Ultra Sun is called Gautama, which is Buddha's first name.

Those are probably all of my favorite nicknames outside of Silver, to be honest. This Silver nuzlocke was honestly the first time I ever went all out on creativity without using a naming theme as a crutch, so I'm glad it went over pretty well.

That's p cool. I tend to give all of my Pokemon creative nicknames if I'm actually using them in the story or competetive. Sterling is a cool name, kinda makes me want to name my Dusk Mane Necrozma something similar now.

I remember a friend named his Palkia GAYFUCKIT, for some reason...

I feel like shinies need special consideration for nicknames, because they're fucking shinies.

I accidentally hatched a perfect shiny Technician that I named Kalashnikov because of Bullet Punch spam
Same thing for the Swablu that popped out while trying to breed a perfect Altaria, named it nugget because it reminded me of golden nuggets cereal.
