I find it mind-boggling that with all the absolute weeabs on here no one bothered to make a Persona 5 thread all this time (or bump the current one if there was already one).

How is it so far? I might get it this Thursday, I've been waiting for a used copy of the steelbook edition to pop-up but a new copy has sprung up for roughly the same price so I'm holding out for a few more days.

I can already tell how my social links are going to go: Makoto > Haru > Everyone else

They're probably too busy playing it.

As for the game, it's great. Music is lovely, the dungeons aren't just random hallways all the time again, and the characters are likeable.

Yeah there is actual design to the story dungeons, which all look lovely and you feel like you're a thief with how you sneak into places. Only criticism is there is another dungeon place called Mementos, which is basically where you grind out if you want extra levels/different personas, and that place is repetitive.

I find the Mementos floors to be brief enough to avoid getting annoying. Besides,
Spoiler
They start getting creepy later on. I like it.

My biggest criticism is that it holds your hand too much in the first part of the game. You're not really free to do what you want until about 8-10 hours in. At least you get your first unscripted battle sooner than P4.

If you're curious, here is a review

YouTube

I only link this because it was the old crew at Gametrailers, and I always found their reviews to go into enough depth to give you a good understanding without spoilering/over indulging, but also not be afraid to point out some flaws. Give it a look.

The main thing I'd like to point out as this review does, is the little things that I love. The loading screens, menu's, and various other small tidbits really are what make this game stand out so much. The devs seemed to have carefully crafted every little detail with care and passion.

What draws you away and why?

I've heard it's been received pretty well, but damn, literally every single thing I've seen of it makes me not ever want to play it or any game in the series.

Sounds a bit racist tbh

It's not weeb Japanese anime tier stuff if that's what you're wondering.

I mean, I've seen enough gameplay and other aspects to know that that's not exactly true. It goes WAY beyond that, in some cases.

I'm not necessarily bothered by it as much, because I think there are plenty of anime tropes that make a better home in the world of video games than they do in cartoons, but I can still easily see how Flee wouldn't be interested. It's not a big deal.

That is apparently a Persona in P5? Idk. It's like Pokemon in that there are hundreds of Persona's. Or maybe like around 200. Taking one example doesn't really mean much.

But yeah I suppose.

Maybe if you're looking to hate it. I don't feel one monster ruins the entire perception of the game or series. That's some stupid logic.

Is it stupid? Yeah, but that doesn't suddenly mean the previous games, or literally everything else in Persona 5 is bad or typical anime stuff. If it was in a cutscene or a pretty big focal point, yeah, you'd be able to make a case easily.

I mean, I can think of 3 overly sexual pokemon right now. One of which is a female version of what you just linked me. Doesn't mean the game or series is suddenly ruined.

i'd say any sexual pokemon are just a result of our filthy minds, not anything inherent with the design

cloyster being a vagina is pretty hard not to see, though, i'll concede that

And any of the bell pokemon being a literal O mouth and tongue

and Lickitung and its description.

Either way, point still stands, but yes, the Cloyster was the most glaring one. But I'm willing to give it a break since when you have so many pokemon thrown in, some are bound to look sexual. Even intentionally sometimes probably.

Dark Souls is also insanely western, which is probably why you like it. Just because it has a hint or two of Japanese themes doesn't take away that it's medieval western things (especially since it takes way too much inspiration from Berserk which is also, surprise, insanely western). Let's break it down though.

Animations don't get old on the turn based combat because nothing is drawn out. And to be honest, the turn based combat is a thing I'm glad sticks around when RPG's are increasingly trying to go for real time action adventure type shit. It's what's destroying Final Fantasy if you ask me. That plus the awesome music Persona always has, this time going for an Acid Jazz vibe which is fantastic.

The menu's are beautiful in art style that fits the tone of the game rather than just a boring menu, but if you don't like that, fair enough

The highschool drama plays in relation to you doing what you do in the game. It's not people talking about who's boyfriend is fucking who

I wouldn't say the game is hyper sexualized. All I can think of is some of the Persona's, but that doesn't surprise me in a rated M game where almost all rated M games have sexual themes. The characters themselves though aren't tripping over shit and showing pantie shots. Dark Souls is guilty of some of this same stuff with women who's tits are only covered with their hair

As for the animation, well yeah of course it has to go for something, but none of the characters are really tropey at all (also, the only broody edgy protagonist is from Persona 3. This guy isn't). Maybe design wise with some of them, but they actually have depth and personality and aren't subject to the lowest common denominator. So you're assuming quite a bit in all categories.

As for the borderline pointless stuff, it's blending in normal life with the shadow world life and such, which was always the appeal of Persona. You don't have to like that though, but it's not really pointless. The game would be stupid if it was just nothing but the combat.

Not everything from Japan is going to be as basic as your yearly summer anime release.

Overall, it seems you're not a fan of a lot of it, but it's not really pointless for what the game sets out to do, or the tone. But I see where you're coming from. Some people just aren't fans of settings or certain tendencies such things take. I can think of a few for myself. Fair enough. I just felt I'd explain a bit more for some clarification.

also Verb don't like his post. shut up and play Persona 3 already you depressing idiot.

and the brooding edgy high school protagonist.

Bruh I can totally understand and accept why you wouldn't want to play it with everything you said EXCEPT this. Even Persona 3 where the blue haired emo-looking slouching MC who blows his brains out to summon his Persona isn't "brooding" or "Edgy" and he's miles closer to that than P5's MC. They're literally designed like Master Chief, blank slates for you to paint your personality onto, that's why you also get to name them; which makes the anime tropes and cliches even greater because when you have Yukiko (best girl) going all blushing cute anime girl saying "Oh Jamal-kun!!" it's fucking hilarious.

And to be honest, the turn based combat is a thing I'm glad sticks around when RPG's are increasingly trying to go for real time action adventure type shit. It's what's destroying Final Fantasy if you ask me.

FFXV was an amazing game though. Tabata literally SAVED FF with real time action combat.
