I think you'd really like Persona 3.
I wouldn't draw that conclusion from just playing Persona 1. They are two different beasts; it does have some neat concepts like memento mori, but the gameplay and story are so far apart from P1 and P2.
I think you'd like Persona 2

Honestly. I think you'd like the first two over P3 and onward. Way more weebier.

well, displeased kinda makes sense given their circumstances

but yeah, it's just an off-putting style

Why P2 is split into two games? Halfway through development, the lead writer thought the story could use another perspective besides the Innocent Sin protagonist, so he began working on the foundation of Eternal Punishment. After IS was do being made, a bulk of the IS team jumped over to work on EP, including some quality of life reworks and improvements gameplay-wise.

It wasn't a money thing, they just decided they wanted to do more with the game at a point where they couldn't just go back and add it in (also probably couldn't do it on one disc, either).
i see

i'm also just aware that these games tend to be a billion years long, so that's also a bit daunting, given how far behind i am
once you get to p3, the games become a lot easier and you can breeze through a standard playthrough quite quickly by abusing the shit out of the once more and all out attack mechanics, just keep a low level spell of each type handy to do sp efficient knock downs.

death spells

because losing 3 out of 5 of your party members instantly after one failed escape attempt is so much fun

this has gone from a 6/10 to a 4/10 for me, REALLY quick

death spells are just an intolerably bad mechanic

i completely understand why this was never recommended to me now, but i'm gonna push through anyway

Eternal Punishment is the highlight of persona games for me. 5 has the best sense of fulfillment and style. 3 is a slog and horribly paced but it's kind of a guilty pleasure.

on a positive note, even though it's convoluted and weird as shit, i actually enjoy negotiating with enemies

some of the dialogue is hilarious, and i like how if you already have an enemy's spell card, you can basically use them to get out of jail free if you don't particularly want to fight a certain enemy

and fusing them together to make personas, and all the nuance that goes into it, seems fun and interesting, even though i've only actually done it once so far

but fuck me running, losing all those spell cards to a bullshit dice roll just because i thought i could go one more battle before retreating back to the save tree is SOOOOO anti-fun

"why don't you just make a persona that resists death spells"

so i could spend literal hours of my life experimenting with personas to find ONE that resists death, and do the same thing for all five members of my party, or i could keep trying to roll the dice and brute force my way through the area

yeah i'm starting to see why this isn't the favorite among persona fans

Optimizating Personas/Demons is always a big part of the series (it's the only way to progress without being underleveled in most games, actually), but P1 is the most rough in terms of how it's handled (it's basically just the SMT demon fusion system but shit). It gets better in P2, but tbh it gets the most definitive improvement in P3.

the trouble is, i don't even know if the demons in this area are capable of producing a death-resistant persona

i'm better off just trying to brute force it, i think, but it's gonna be very frustrating—i have a spell that can induce mute, but it doesn't seem to work on the toilets whatsoever

at least in DDS, demons didn't start using mudoon until way later, i'm still early on—maybe this is just a beginner's trap

It's a PS1-era dungeon crawler. the PSP port fixed a lot about the game, but it's still incredibly rough. Only some /vr/ fag with a hard-on for their childhood would say that P1 belongs anywhere but the bottom of the list (gameplay, anyways).

Persona 3 was basically a reboot in all but name, and was well-received in general. Persona 4 made the franchise popular in the west, especially with the Vita port (since it's still one of the only must-haves for the system).

oh, i know about all that

i just mean, enough people must have enjoyed the first few enough for them to even make a 3, right

first installments are often weird and dated, yeah, but rarely do they want to make you pull your hair out
