When it came out it was groundbreaking. Amazing scenery, radiant AI, a world of unprecedented scale, and Patrick Stewart. Yeah the combat was clunky but it was leaps and bounds ahead of Morrowind, which I still consider my favorite game of all time. I also really liked the Oblivion gates, and while there could have been more variety I thought they introduced a really interesting alternative to the typical TES dungeons.

It hasn't aged well. I've tried playing it a few tries an I just can't, after playing Skyrim. However, there are a lot of things I like in it; more skills, better character setup, the magic system, not becoming the leader of an organisation after a couple hours and so forth. Though the graphics are bad- even for a 2006 game- and the menus are pretty terrible.

Calling Skyrim an RPG is a bit generous. But more than anything, it's humungously overrated and bafflingly glitchy. Oblivion has things called "depth" and "quest variety," which seem to be alien concepts to the world of Skyrim.

I really wish I'd been able to play it when it released, because it's aged so horrifically badly that it's unplayable for me.

I'm really not one to get snitty over 'muh graphics' but god damn it's like the potato scrolls ._____.
It's that awful awkward period where games were moving into more modern style graphics from the old polygon blobs which were fine. Idek, it's just too hideous to actually play :/

The side quests were Oblivion's only redeeming factor.

I haven't played the other ES games besides Skyrim and Oblivion, so I can't talk about them in relation to the others. But I can relate them to each other.

I thought Skyrim expanded on the world, in terms of size and concentration of content from Oblivion (I can already hear the Daggerfall fans laughing). This content gets repetitive and is for the most part generic. The main questline of OblivionI thought had advantages over Skyrim's. I felt as if the content in Skyrim was designed for sampling. Quests were cursory in general, just when the action seemed to get started it would fizzle out. In Oblivion the faction quests felt much more substantial (mainly DB and TG), and I think the main quest was less generic than killing a world ending dragon. You had to stop a Daedric Lord from another plane of existence invading Tamriel (and perhaps Nirn as a whole). While this concept isn't wholly fleshed out or exciting (looking at you, Bruma battle), I think it had a bit more dimension than Skyrim's story.

The situations you encounter are parallel, meeting the Storm Cloaks and Legion instead of the Blades upon the mandated prison escape, trying to stop another enemy from buggering the world like Alduin or Mehrune's Dagon. Both feature invasion with Oblivion gates or the Thalmor along with the Legion (indiectly) or the dragons (directly), you engage in subterfuge with Baurus or Delphine (who might be the same character, now that I think about this), go to the enemy stronghold in Cameron's paradise or the dragon temple, then defeat the bad guy with some heroic or divine assistance.

My god, Bethesda used a similar formula to squeeze money out of its fanbase, this is a shocking development!

The only objective reason you have is that it butchered Cyrodiil. Everything else is subjective or is still something wrong in Skyrim.

Morrowind had it right about being chracter based instead of skill based but it was too damn RND based. Then for Oblivion and Skyrim it's just a hack and slash.
