not me, but a couple of my friends have a PS5, and they've been having a good time with them—apparently haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are the real deal

meanwhile, i don't know anyone with a sexbox, and i'm pretty sure most people don't even understand that it's a next gen console—they Wii U'd themselves pretty hard with the marketing on that one (perhaps intentionally as an excuse to exit the console race, which they've supposedly been trying to do for a while now or something)

Long live NoNolesNeckin.

Ya fuckin' ganderneck.
tbh I have no interest in getting any of the new consoles. Especially since I should be able to play just about anything I'd be looking forward to on PC going forward.

I actually did, for this gen.
HL Alyx was the game that made me switch and the fact that Infinite will be on PC, add to that the price increase of next-gen games and paying for online play... Things just fell in place.
Built a PC in October and it's been a blast, though I still play on my X1X.
The timing could not be better either. Not only did the supply dry up right after, but Brexit screwed up a lot of local suppliers here. I pity anyone who is trying to build one right now or upgrade.

I've heard positive things about the controller too. Though apparently there are some reliability issues?

The 'series' name is stupid. It doesn't sound good, its not easy to pronounce and there are already X and S Xbox-es.
If MS is moving away from consoles and will just be a service provider, I would only be slightly surprised.

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
I'll be getting the PS5 eventually. There's no reason to buy an Xbox since you can play all the games they're going to release on PC anyways.

Halo Infinite is going to flop so hard and the acquisition of Bethesda by Microsoft doesn't necessarily excite me all that much given their recent track history.

As soon as they stopped selling it themselves, that's the green light.

I'm not sure if its available digitally through their store though.

Buy a copy on ebay and then it's completely legal to own a copy of the ROM.  Ta-da!

There is no-where you can buy Majora's Mask and have it contribute money to Nintendo's bank account.

that's a commonly circulated meme, but unfortunately, not how it actually works—you could argue from an ethical standpoint that it's okay to do it that way, and i wouldn't be able to argue with you, but there's no law that says "it's okay to steal something if you already own one copy of it"—you could have a million apples, and it still wouldn't be okay to steal one more apple (if anything, that only makes it worse, because why would you need one more apple at that point)

majora's mask is currently purchasable on the Wii U's e-shop, so that would be your one option as far as supporting the developer goes (not that flea markets aren't worthy of monetary support—they are, and piracy hurts them, too)

but if we're talking about a game that genuinely isn't available to be purchased anywhere, then that's kinda tough shit from a legal standpoint—i don't like it either, especially for the sake of preservation, but that's the way it is

not that i'm saying you should care about any of this—you can do whatever you want—i just personally find it a little disingenuous and irresponsible to argue that PC lets you play "all games" when you essentially have to steal in order for that to be true—and if stealing is okay, why isn't the same true for consoles? because it's harder to get away with? you wouldn't steal physical copies of games if you could get away with it, would you?

all you really needed to say was "steam" and you would've had a solid foundation, even if the majority of games available on steam are also available on console

You see, you are working with the predicate that all laws concerning this issue are perfect.

They are not. They are made to serve publishers.
They should all be reviewed and we really need to get the opinion of the original creators on this.
Once a company stops selling a product and there is no way to buy directly from the publisher or developer - are you ok if someone was to acquire a free digital copy of your product and if not, in what circumstances would they be ok with that?
If I buy a used copy first?
If X amount of years passes after the last sale date?

Its more like, you want apple juice but all you have are apples. The law would says - if you have a raw apple, its illegal to squeeze the juice out of them, only {Publisher} is allowed to make apple juice out of apples.

C'mon man, I have all I need to make the juice but some tie-wearing (no offence, Flee) nerd prohibited it.

Also fuck Apple and their anti-repair policies.

The law actually states that it is completely legal to get the ROM from your purchased copy of any game.  It's also legal to modify it from there.  What's illegal is distributing it.

If you're against buying games second-hand that's fine, it just limits your options.  Downloading the game online is literally no different than buying a game secondhand, or borrowing it from a friend, or being given it by a friend.  And again, if you're against all of those things that's your prerogative, but it's not really much of a moral crusader standpoint to be against used game sales or friends sharing games because the billion dollar industry won't get more money from it.

Hmm...
I got a Series X. It's ok. I really only use it for Destiny, in which it behaves about the same as my mid-range gaming PC. My only complaint is really regarding the ports:

1. No optical port for headsets, so you must use either wireless OR USB 3.
2. No USB-C. Kinda weird and not a deal breaker, but I expected a next-gen console to have at least one USB-C port.

Honestly? Unless you can't deal with load times on old-gen or really really want that 4k gaming experience, you might be better off waiting for the slim version (because we all know it's gonna be a thing). If this wasn't a gift and if my clan didn't main Xbox on Destiny 2, I'd still be on PC.

Haven't kept up with much for gaming news really. I honestly didn't even know there was new consoles out.

Don't have much in the way of time or space to do much gaming anymore. Couldn't cram my flatscreen into my camper if I wanted to.

I'm pretty sure you can make a rom from a copy you already own, and as long as you don't distribute said rom to others, acquire the rom from illegal distribution or sell your physical copy there's no law to prevent you from playing it via emulator. Regardless of whether you purchased it directly from the developer or second-hand.

Also fuck supporting Nintendo directly all my homies buy second-hand.

i'm working with the predicate that the law is the law, regardless of whether it's perfect and regardless of whether you like it or not

The law actually states that it is completely legal to get the ROM from your purchased copy of any game.  It's also legal to modify it from there.  What's illegal is distributing it.
choosing to play a game on an inferior machine that the game was never intended to be played on in the first place doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but okay i guess

Quote
If you're against buying games second-hand that's fine, it just limits your options.
the post you're quoting literally said that i want flea markets to receive financial support because they deserve it, so idk how you took this position away from it—flea markets are generally the way to go these days when it comes to retro games in particular, and it's not illegal to sell pre-owned video games, so it wouldn't make sense for me to be against buying games second-hand

Quote
Downloading the game online is literally no different than buying a game secondhand, or borrowing it from a friend, or being given it by a friend.
this argument kind of works if you're talking about torrents or parsec or something along those lines, but not if you're making new copies—the main difference being, when you borrow a physical copy of a game from a friend, you're not producing another physical copy of it, which is what makes it okay

even then, the idea that a seeder is your "friend" is also fairly disingenuous, because they are most certainly not your friend—you're anonymous strangers collaborating on the circumvention of having to pay for something

when a friend lets you borrow something, it's not because they want you to avoid having to pay for something—it's mainly because they're your friend. if i cared about people having to pay for shit, i wouldn't be so exclusive about who i allow to borrow my shit, so it's really just not the same thing

bottom line is, if i were to drop my principles right now, and say that all of this is okay, i'm basically never going to spend a dollar on a video game ever again, because i'm going to find ways to download absolutely everything—even if they actually made games cheaper and more accessible, nothing beats getting it for free, so why pay any money at all

it's a very black and white subject for me—you're either always okay with being a thief, or you're never okay with it

to be sometimes okay with being a thief doesn't make any sense to me as a moral position, because any line you draw in the sand between what's okay or not okay to steal is going to be totally arbitrary. and will most likely boil down to "it's okay, because i want it, and i don't want to pay money for it" or "it's okay because big corporation bad"

how about "it's never okay"? what's so bad about that? oh yeah, you don't get free shit

i just don't know why you would do this, unless you suffer from "PC master race" brainrot to such a degree that the mere thought of playing a game on its intended console makes you want to vomit, or something

best justification i can think of would be a speedrunner who wants to use emulator tools for the sake of practice

no console old enough to break down can't be found for a reasonable price somewhere—i collect retro games as a hobby, so i should know

granted, i don't know how true this is outside of the US, so you might be at a disadvantage

at the same time, nobody said that any of this was good or fair—if i can't play a game because it's unavailable to me for bullshit reasons, that fucking sucks, but i personally find it very easy to suck it up

One more thing that happens with consoles is that they discontinue and become a rarity, as well as controllers for them. I tried looking for a controller for my taiwanese NES clone after my mom broke it after having a bit of gamer rage (which was new to her), and I couldn't find any, had to fix it myself. On other hand you can still play ROM on a computer. Also ROMs can come in variety of languages, even with translations. I don't have to spend a lot of time to figure out what means what if what I got was cartridge with japanese or (god forbid) chinese game with ROMs, as much charming it could be not understaning contents of some games like Little Nemo The Dream master. At some extreme cases lack of translation makes game quite unplayable, it's the case with some visual novels.

Nah my main reason for emulating certain games would be to netplay older titles that don't have an online feature/no longer have a supported online. It's a pretty niche reason and only really applies to Melee netplay for me where netplay allows access to long distance friendlies that are otherwise hard to access. Also my SNES has a hard time starting up certain games, and it's kind of a pain in the ass trying to remove, clean and reset Yoshi's Island 50+ times before it finally boots up properly lol.

Outside those reasons and cases where people might want to stream their games but don't have a capture card, I mostly prefer to play through the original console.
