For me it depends on how it's done. If it's something like AVGN or Nerd 3 I can watch them all day, but when it comes down to regular playing I find them boring. When there's no difference between the way they're playing and me I might as well play the game.
The key difference in this case is skill level. You're watching professional gamers.
Skill level or not they're still doing the same thing that I'm able to do if I have the same game. It's a little different for sports, but when it comes down to video games it's hardly a difference. Someone playing MLG in Halo is no different than me playing online.
Why is it different from sports?
It depends on how you do it. Playing something football or baseball in your yard would be a little different if you don't have the same size field and setup. The other thing would be the rules. If you're playing with a group of people you might not be going by the same type of rules that they do. You might even go by your own.
