Yeah that's why I think it would have been good if he was't able to properly salute at the end of MGS4.

The entire reason he salutes is to milk MGS3. The cigar lighting scene achieves the whole "he's too weak" aspect better.

It's just needless fan service that kinda makes the series' strongest moment less impactful in retrospect.

It's not that your voice is different--that is how you sound. When you speak, you're not really focusing on your own voice as much as you're focusing on whoever you're talking to, so that's why we don't really tend to notice how our own voice really sounds.

Mantis is controlled by whoever feels the greatest need for revenge and takes on aspects of that person. That's why Skull Face wonders WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO is controlling Mantis at the end of the game; he's shocked that somebody could feel more hate than he does.

This cutscene (and the MGS1 one) is better than anyone in 5. A a comment said.

In hindsight I'd say it's more the latter. At the start of the game he assisted Venom Snake in wiping out the soldiers that came to kill him by focusing more on them than him, but he clearly wasn't controlled by Venom. Perhaps he's acting on their conscious desires (whether they want him to or not) rather than outright taking orders from them.

That's just my interpretation, though.
