Considering that Portable Ops, the game in question, is the least-played main-line Metal Gear game, they can afford to skip minor plot-points that will likely not affect much of the EU.

The games themselves have NEVER put continuity before gameplay or story, meaning that it can essentially be thrown-out altogether if you wanted to. My point being that the games stand on their own, without "digging deeper".

If you really can't wait that long, watch Snake Eater and Peace Walker's cutscenes on YouTube. I still recommend you play both games eventually, but you'd be better off at least understanding what's going on then being clueless come Tuesday. SE has about 5 hours of cutscenes and PW has about 3, IIRC. No time at all.

Kojima has stated that there will be flashbacks to the previous games to help newer players understand, but if reviews are any indication, any ill-versed fan may be left potentially confused by the end of the game.
