It makes the PVP game much more satisfying and worthwhile.
Can people grief with that mechanic? Yeah, but that's the risk you take when playing that kind of game and no one is forcing you to play it.
I died 3 times on the Iron Golem. Last death was so bullshit. I was at his legs and he was rotating and I got pushed off lol
