For myself Oblivion(The only time that game gave off that feeling to me was from that DLC.) and Skyrim don't give off that feeling to me all that much. With Morrowind we have environments, buildings and creatures that look like they're from another world. With Oblivion and Skyrim we have shit that looks like it's from Earth. Instead of having some badass looking towns and castles that look like they're from LoTR or simlar. We have generic looking towns and castles that look like something from the middle ages.

For the creatures it's the same thing. Instead of having creatures that are based off of something or made up a lot of them are just shit we have on Earth. Oh boy bears and wolfs. Look at Shadow of Modor. The Caragor's are most likely a lion like animal. In Skyrim on the other hand instead of having a made up animal like that we just have a mounting lion that's from Earth. It's the same thing with the mounts. In LoTR not only do they have horses, but they have those giant pigs, those wolfs, those dragon like creatures and those Caragor's. In Oblivion and Skyrim we just have horses.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Never did

Nah, the game with Nazi elves that want to un-make reality, a hermaphroditic literally bi-racial god-king who's spear is literally and metaphorically his penis, and space-traveling moths and sunbirds, focusing on enantiomorphs and god-heads, set in the consciousness of a sleeping god, is totally not fantasy.

It's science fiction.

If only the games were as interesting as the books inside the games.

Agreed. What I love is that in the lore there are other races but we're stuck with the same old ones since the start of the game. Hell for the beast races there's different sup-races for them but we are stuck with only one of them. This series could be great if the developer put depth into it and actually tried on the fantasy part. LoTR and The Hobbit looked great due to how fantasy it looked. The current Elder Scrolls games now look so bland.

They feel fantasy, but I don't think they're perfect. I really want to see some of the other races in the games, like the Sloads and all of the Akaviri stuff.

Same here. It gets boring playing as the old same races and seeing them. It wouldn't be so bad if the majority of the races you play as weren't humans. Instead of having all these human races they should have done something like having the Redguards be some sand lizard kike race.

Well, I think they're too far in now to conjure something new up unless you went down a route like the Falmer in Skyrim.

But considering that we have a good deal on (potentially) four akaviri civilisations- one of which is believed to have contacted Tammriel- I would love to see Akavir as a location. Especially considering that that's where the Dragons come from.

^^^ Is a really interesting link.

I enjoyed them nevertheless

Yeah, of course. I have no idea how you could play a TES game without feeling like you're in a fantasy setting.

Its just so generic as fantasy. Far too 'medieval' to me.

Games like Dark Souls and Final Fantasy give me that fantasy feel.

Yes it's fantasy but when you compare it to LoTR or even Morrowind do the current two games look as fantasy as them? In LoTR and Morrowind there are a lot of made up animals. In Oblivion and Skyrim a lot of them are earth animals like wolves. In LoTR they have those pig mounts and wolf mounts. In Oblivion and Skyrim we just have plan old horses. Hell you don't even see the giants ridding on those mammoths of theirs. Hell in the lore the werebears are the most common type but in Skyrim we have wearwolfs instead. So instead of having the werebears being there, the argonians having a lizard form and the cat people having a lion like form. We instead of this generic werewolf form. There's hardly any depth to the games anymore.

For the environment look at the towns and castles. In Morrowind like I said everything looked like it's from a different world. Meanwhile in Oblivion and Skyrim nearly everything looks Earth like out side the DLC for the games. Look at the castles in LoTR. Instead of having ones that look like that the majority of them are these generic looking things.

TES wrote the book on how a lot of pop fantasy is portrayed, particularly in video games. If it feels generic it's because it started the trends of mainstream fantasy.

As for final fantasy, I'd say it depends on the game. The modern FF sagas are more along the lines of sci-fi.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
It's Pseudo-Medieval Europe with magic and elves. It's pretty low fantasy in comparison to Morrowind.

Yes. It feels like a fantasy when I slay a frost troll with fire magic, transform into a werewolf, and slay a giant by calling a dragon in for air support. All as a nazi 'person with political differences' elf.

Could it be more imaginative, and less hamstrung by lazy/casualized development? Probably

And I'd disagree that Oblivion was generic, too. It introduced quite a bit of new narrative to fantasy (and video games in general), and was years beyond the competition at the time.
