Is MGSV worth playing?

This is coming from the perspective of someone who has never played a Metal Gear game in his life so bear with me in case this game is an actual masterpiece and I was unaware.

I found it while looking through my PS Library (presumably it was free one of the months) and recognised that I definitely had not played it. So I ask before I commit the hard drive space, what did you think of it if you played it?

haven't played it either, but i think metal gear is one of those franchises you should try to play in sequential order first

you don't necessarily have to start with the original MSX2 games from the '80s, but starting with MGS1 is recommended

that is, unless you don't care about the story or whatever—it's just a big part of the franchise's appeal

Is the story seriously that confusing or is it just context heavy?

people meme about how confusing it is, but it's really just very dense and, yeah, context-heavy

It's not complex, just... a tad convoluted at times. There are a couple of retcons along the way, and some story bits that honestly don't need to be explained (MGSV) or loose ends that are just tied up unsatisfactorily (again, MGSV), but overall it's a fun series.

I started with MGS3, then played trough the rest of the series afterward in order. Only real let down was V, but the gameplay was fun overall. MGO3 really just made me wish for 2 again tho.

MGSV is fine as an open world stealth game if you only care about the gameplay
