Is Mass Effect worth it?

So, uh, Christmas is coming up and all, and I'll likely be able to get a few games. I was wondering if Mass Effect is worth it? I'm considering getting the trilogy. I have absolutely no knowledge about the game, asides from it being about choices and stuff. Would you recommend it?

Not really. They're ok aesthetically and the story depth is commendable, but the gameplay is uninspired. If you want to play for the experience, sure, it's worth, but I don't think they're particularly good games.

I would personally be uneasy buying an entire trilogy without playing any of the entries yet. I didn't actually enjoy Mass Effect until the second time I attempted playing it, which is when I fell in love with it.

Just be aware that the second and third games are quite a bit more polished than the first. Bigger budgets and lessons learned go a long way.

1's gunplay is pretty shit. Get it for the character choices/ story stuff. 2 and 3 are great all round and despite the fact everyone shits on the overall ending (though I gather its more out of ev promises as opposed to the actual ending), I found them enjoyable. ME2 has a shit ton of free DLC and ME3 has a lot as well. Overall, I think the games are worth it.

First one all round had me like "dude yes"

Second one is a great game but the main plot was so bad it had me like "dude what"

Third one is like a frustrating but still decent game with some nice theming but at several places it had me like "dude no"

Also whatever you do: Do not listen to the end credits music before playing the game

ME1 is brilliant, but gameplay is a tad dated by now.
ME2 is great, but the plot in't very good.
ME3 is good up until the end.

I'd say it's worth it.

Yes. 1 is a little rough, you might not like it. If that's the case, don't let that ruin a trilogy for you. Try 2 if 1 isn't doing it.

I like it. But be warned Mass Effect 1 can get painfully slow at points
Mass Effect 2 is the best
Part 3 is great but the ending ruins it plus it lacks some of the things that made 2 the best such as Loyalty and a huge squad

Yes, it is. Its full of lovable/memorable characters, has a great story, and fun gameplay.

I played Mass Effect 1 last (cause I'm a dumd) and I enjoyed that one the most.

Good to see that somebody else thinks so. They pretty much removed all RPG elements from the second and third games and made them more action oriented, I was not a fan of the change but still had fun with the games. Mass Effect 1 was the pinnacle of the series for me though.

The story and RPG stuff were great but the gameplay was terrible.

It's super dated and if you get bored with games that don't immediately grab your attention, don't buy it.

Learning how to do everything can be daunting and will often lead to tons of backtracking and help from the internet.

Yes. I did not start playing the first one until 2010...but it is worth every penny. I wish they were re-released on next gen, which will probably happen soon. Despite what people have said about the third installment's ending, it is an amazing franchise. Everything is superb; music, characters, locations, factions, alien species- it will surpass the lore of anything you have played before if you put the time into it. ME1 can feel a little outdated and clunky gameplay-wise. Prepare to waste hours upon hours of your life...it is the pinnacle of a sci-fi game done right. I miss it...just listen to this. All the feels...

ME1 has a great story and exploration but meh gameplay.
ME2 is my personal favourite. Great gameplay, okay story, but I really liked the tone to it and the ending sequence is one of my favourites ever. Don't spoil it for yourself if you haven't already.
ME3 has great gameplay with some good moments, however there's a lack of hub worlds, exploration and the ending sucks cock.

Basically each game's good points cancel out another game's bad points.
