TLOU wasnt even in the top 10 best games the year it was released, which was a pretty weak year in the first place.

Name the top 10 best games of 2013.

Spoiler
This is going to be interesting.

KOTOR 2

Never played it, actually. I didn't get into Star Wars until 3 or 4 years ago, and by then I just figured the game would be too dated for me to enjoy.

I like when people say the gameplay isn't unique so that's why they don't like it

Unless you're playing fucking octodad no games gameplay is unique

Literally my only complaint about the game is the fact that Ellie could fucking stitch up Joel when he was impaled.

My biggest complaint is what they showed at E3 vs. what we got. The AI shown prior to release was phenomenal, the one featured in the game reminds me of Hodor on LSD.

itd be presumptuous to make a top 10 list but here are 10 games that were better than TLOU from 2013:
hotline miami
bioshock infinite
guacamelee
far cry 3: blood dragon
dust: an elysian tail
animal crossing: new leaf
dota 2
shin megami tensei iv
payday 2
spelunky

and lets keep going, shall we?
diablo iii
arma iii
gta v
beyond: two souls
the wolf among us
pokemon x/y
ac: black flag
the stanley parable

TLOU is incredibly overrated. its nowhere near "all time" status.

Considering you have games like GTA V, Bioshock Infinite, and Payday 2 on your list, I think we're going to fundamentally disagree here. We clearly have different taste and standards for video games.

Your opinion makes me want to vomit.

Good thing I don't give an Alaskan rat's ass about your opinion. I've said it before and I'll say it again, bring something of value to the conversation or leave. It's that simple.

The story isn't anything special and the gameplay is fairly average. If the majority of your experience with narrative is from games I can see how you might think that TLOU is amazing though since video game writing is typically pretty shitty.

It seems you're drinking the kool-aid though so that's likely why people aren't bothering to debate with you. They're almost certain that it will be a fruitless endeavor.

I agree with you on the "video game writing is typically pretty shitty." I don't even know why you would bring that up, though, as I didn't say anywhere in my post that TLOU's best quality is the narrative. The acting is superb, however. By both video game standards and film.

As for the gameplay, the mechanics are fairly average, not the gameplay itself. Two different things.

It's a mix of this, no one being online/on Gaming, and people agreeing with me.

I don't buy a game for good voice acting and I don't buy a game for average gameplay that doesn't really do anything different. Especially in a single player heavy game.

To me TLOU is nothing more than a formulaic zombie story with rather average gameplay.
this is exactly it. it was an ok game with good production value. a 5/10.

on that note, we agree. i dont even think most of those games are any good. its just a testament to how poorly i think of TLOU.

If the comment I read is right in the E3 video you get ammo by emptying the rounds from the gun instead of just picking it up. That would have been great for a survival based game.

Not only that, but the AI flanked you, hid from you, realised when your magazine was empty and charged you accordingly.

YouTube

Watch from 3:25 onward. Look how the enemy AI sneaks up on you. Just something to think about.

Apparently, TLOU's AI was entirely scrapped a few months before release, but what are you gunna do.

That's just elitist bullshit, and you know it. You can dislike the game without trying to promote yourself as some enlightened game-quality guru.

TLOU is a terrible game and if you consider it one of the "best" of anything you should probably kill yourself.

That's a sensible reason to end one's existence.

God, you nerds are so melodramatic.

Even that statement is elitist. You're implying I don't have standards.

Look, I can understand someone not liking the game (LC stated his opinion rather well, actually. Something I didn't expect from that kind of user) for your reasons. But you saying "it's made for the casual audience" (more or less), is trying to put yourself off as someone above the "peasants" or, "serfs" of the gaming industry.

"The common people enjoy TLOU. They need it for their casual mindset. Not people like me, though. People with standards."

the way i see it is, you can argue about TLOU being good or not all you want. ill grant that the ability to enjoy a game is subjective and everyone has different tastes. but, at the same time, can you really, in good faith, place TLOU on a list of all-time greats? it wasnt anywhere near the best game of its year. only a few 2013 games can begin to claim "all time" status: guacamelee, DOTA 2, and hotline miami.

game wise, it's a terrible game, clunky controls coupled with boring combat mechanics and a game wide escort mission makes it a bad game.

the story on the other hand is great, and engaging, with characters you can feel are alive, and you can remember.

Of course I can. It isn't on my top of all time, but it is certainly one of the best of the last generation, which should guarantee a spot on anyone's list. Considering the quality of video games skyrocketed after Xbox and PS2 launched.

I would argue that the gameplay is the game's strength, but I should save my debating energy for some of the other users here. Lol.

call me an elitist all you want, but the reality is that i try to look objectively at games, without letting new game or nostalgia goggles blind me to the realities of their existence. the last of us didnt do anything special with regards to game mechanics, maps, interactive combat, or role playing elements. it was an ok zombie game framed by a decent plot (of course, video game writing tends to be complete shit most of the time, but perspective is important here; it's pretty good writing, comparitively) with great production values. those things came together in a nice framework when you consider the advertising hype put behind it. it was bound to go viral, because it was accessible and catered to popular interest. in that regard, it was a wild success.. but that isn't a unique quality, not by a long shot.

The hardest parts were the bloater, falling down the elevator shaft, after you give Ellie the sniper rifle, and the final section before you get Ellie.

This is another thing I have an issue with.

How is Uncharted 2 a fun game? I see how it could be better than 1 and 3, but for the life of me, I can't get into it.

It's just shooting gallery, platforming, shooting gallery. The characters are semi-interesting but the narrative is too tied in convention to go anywhere interesting with them.

I really really want to like these games and hop on the UC4 bandwagon but I can't get myself to enjoy them.

I'm tired of zombie games, and while I enjoy a good story in video games, the whole advertising campaign gave me the impression that it the gameplay was shallow for it. That's wrong, I know now, but by the time I figured it out I lost all interest in it. Naughty Dog re-releasing the game in less than a year as a "remaster" that doesn't even include all the DLC made me avoid it at all costs. I despise those business practices.

1) The majority of the game is spent killing humans, not the infected.
2) The Remastered edition does come with all the DLC, to my knowledge.
3) I'm pretty much on the same boat as you for everything else, though. I don't like zombie games at all (the whole concept is rather played out, actually). I didn't actually play TLOU until it was released on PS4, and that was a smart business plan. A report said that 60% of PS4 users didn't own a PS3, so it was a safe assumption to make that those players hadn't played the most critically acclaimed PS3 game. So, if you had already bought TLOU, you didn't need to upgrade. If you hadn't played the game, you got the chance to. I don't think there's anything despicable about that.

However, ND did release a "Full-collection" version on the PS3 that was $60 that included all the DLC. That's some shady shit, I'll agree. That's milking.

They began adding more DLC after the remaster came out. Stuff like headgear and new death animations.

"Nickel and Diming" isn't exactly the most ethical practice.
