I watched TLOU and I didn't feel like I missed anything. The story wasn't some kind of game changing meta medium feat like everyone proclaimed it to be [though it's obviously solid]. Almost every single one of the above games made me immediately want to get out and personally play them before I actually acquired them, through a trailer or a unique gameplay element or a distinctive atmosphere.

I can understand why people think it's a great game, but I can't ever see myself saying "yeah, this is on the level of DX" or something.

And before someone goes out and says "BUT YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED IT," I understand that I'm not qualified enough to provide a detailed opinion of the game. That being said, I don't need to have a detailed opinion on the game to make the comparison OP describes. The games I described, I like because of major elements which are far above TLOU, and obviously so.

Almost every single one of the above games made me immediately want to get out and personally play them before I actually acquired them, through a trailer or a unique gameplay element or a distinctive atmosphere.

I can understand why people think it's a great game, but I can't ever see myself saying "yeah, this is on the level of DX" or something.

But see, that's the thing. While the story is superb, it's not the game's strong point, IMO.

When sceptics play this game, they typically go play on the lowest or lower difficulties, as to easily get through the game and experience this "masterpiece" everyone talks about.

But you simply cannot experience the full effect of what this game makes you feel while playing on these difficulties. It's simply too easy. I'll admit, the first time I play TLOU, I thought more or less the same as you (I think I might've been a bit more harsh). But I wanted to get the platinum trophy, so I set the game's difficulty to Grounded (it's hardest mode). And the experience just changes. Suddenly, death is a very real possibility, and managing your supplies is no easy feat. Do I use my last round to finish off this clicker, whilst quickly sprinting to the crowbar on the floor back there and pummeling the other two runners? Do I test my luck with arrows to see if they break?

I never once upgraded Joel on my first playthrough, but it's an absolute necessity to do so on the harder modes. And to do that, you need upgrade materials. To get those, you must explore your surroundings.

And while exploring said surroundings, you get to interact with the game's heart and soul: Ellie. You'll come across a movie poster, that Joel went to see with his daughter, and Ellie will have no idea what the hell it is. Or she'll make a comment on how skinny a model looks in an ad on the streets.

Y'know, it's not often a game makes me feel truly immersed in their game. But by the time I had finished playing TLOU (I think I almost put 60 hours in), I thought I had found all the little hidden dialogues in the game.

NOPE.

I was shooting some birds one day, and Ellie struck up a conversation that I had never heard or seen on the internet or anything. It was amazing. I had to assume that Ellie was a living breathing character, because no game had ever done that to me before.

So to summarise, it's not the story, or the way it's told. It's the sandbox of a game that ND puts us in and says "knock yourself out" that makes people love this game, I think.

Of course, feel free to disagree or call me out. I don't mind.

[I looked over this and saw many spelling errors but i'm too tired to fix them. hopefully you get the jist of what I'm saying.]

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
It looks really boring

I don't buy a game for good voice acting and I don't buy a game for average gameplay that doesn't really do anything different. Especially in a single player heavy game.

To me TLOU is nothing more than a formulaic zombie story with rather average gameplay.

These have been done before but in regards to the crafting, the game creates such an intense, tension-filled environment (for the most part) that you have to essentially gamble to see if you can craft that last molotov in time.

The cover system is hit or miss for me. MGSV has it too and it works better because of the game's nature and the lean feature.

But nonetheless, TLOU's cover system still fits within the game's apparent need to differentiate itself from other TPS, mostly Uncharted.

I'm currently having this same problem with Dragon Age: Origins. Everyone was saying how good it was and how I needed to play it, I'm about 30 hours in and I haven't really had it click yet.

Console or PC? If it's PC then that's the only way that game can be good due to you needing a mod for the game to be complete. It's hard for a story based game to be one of the best games of all time when the story is unfinished which by the way is missing key plot and story elements to it.

Literally my only complaint about the game is the fact that Ellie could fucking stitch up Joel when he was impaled.
