I mean, the jump from PS2 to PS3 felt so significant that I was really impressed by how good the games looked. But the jump from PS3 to PS4 felt like less of a big deal.  I KNOW the games have better graphics but at this point it's just like 'yeah, it's not bad but I'm not amazed or anything.'

 It's just expected that all the games look good nowadays, nothing wows me. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Ye. Halo 5 might be more advanced in terms of shaders, polygons, and texture sizes, but Halo 3 and Reach look much better.

I liked studying all the effort put into what was made.

I think maybe you've miscategorized it. You're tired of photorealism. A lot of games out there strive for it and I think when some people mention graphics this is what they're mentioning in the background of their head. Notice that a lot of games are automatically considered as having "good graphics" the more photorealistic their style is. For a long time, games have strived to make things look more realistic and believable.

It mirrors the art community somewhat. There was a big trend and focus in realism. And then it petered out as it became an over-saturated style. I believe the same applies to games these days. Difference is, I don't think we've seen the explosion of variety that's possible yet.

That's because it was a more significant jump due to HD.

You'll see graphics improve in detail but we've really been maxing things out.

The only game graphically that's really "wowed" me is Battlefield 1.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
I think that's a good thing.

Rather than trying to break the boundaries and technical limitations of the previous generation of console and PC hardware, we're starting to focus on either immersion, compelling stories, and other aspects of games that are arguably more important.

We've already hit the stage of realistic/"hyper-realistic" graphics with more polygons and shaders/ENB's than you can shake a stick at, so stuff like VR and integration into a game (like those omni movement thingies):

are making a successful comeback from the shit in the early 90's.

I can't say stories have gotten better yet as most recent stuff I haven't had time to play (or I haven't had interest in it, contrary to what Verb has for Breathe of the Wild), but it seems more likely as graphics will be far less of a selling point than it has been for every previous generation of consoles, as well as the console vs PC memes that pop out every so often.

No longer will it be "but you can see the aliasing!" or "Man this shooter sucks, the gun barrel is just a dodecagon" but "The protagonist has no depth", "This game is just a fairground ride that you can't get off", "why did that happen? That deviates from canon/lore/whatever".

I dunno about you but Horizon Zero Dawn looks amazing. And it's more now about the small details. Take Uncharted 4. Sure, just by looking at it, it's a great looking game. But look at the small details. The hair, the skin, interactivity with objects, etc...

I was actually more impressed by Mario Kart 8/Smash 4's visuals than I was by Halo 5.

But yeah I stopped really caring about having impressive graphics years ago. Halo 4's graphics and lighting engine was way more complex at the time and I still think Reach looks miles better.

I can appreciate a particularly advanced looking game like SWBF or Uncharted, but I just think all the bungie.net fags who use console processing power as the whole basis of their argument when deciding on a console to be fucking stupid and missing the point of gaming entirely.

Style and visual is what I look at now. I think the only game that I really looked at and thought 'The graphics are amazing' is BF1, mainly because they did really well with it, you cant really get much better than that, or above it.

Most companies have good graphics now

As far as judging a game's quality, I agree.
But it still is very impressive to see how games push technical limitations and make advancements on things like water physics, real time reflections, etc...  And it's even better when those effects actually have an impact on the gameplay.

Some games are pretty stark contrasts. Uncharted 2 and 3 are some of the only exceptions.

the graphical jump from last gen to this gen was never going to be amazing. the real advancements have been in the size of the worlds, more realistic physics, and the amount of different things that can go on in these games at once on screen
