I don't know what I'm doing, but I've had this game for a while, and I have played it before but I cheated and didn't know what I was doing then, and I still don't.

Castles are military settlements, cities are commercial ones

Keep the pope happy if you're a Catholic faction, and go after the Eastern Orthodox or Islamic factions

Princesses are essentially diplomats that you can marry off to other factions

Be sure to keep your economy in check, it's easy to destroy it with over-construction/over-recruiting, especially in the early game.

Completely destroying a faction can open it up in the grand campaign, but not all the factions are playable. If you achieve your victory conditions in a campaign, you'll unlock them all, I think.

Other factions are complete bastards when it comes to merchants.

Using assassins will make your faction leaders get the cruel character traits.

Having lots of priests also keeps the pope happy and makes it more likely for one of them to become a cardinal and eventually get elected as the next pope.

It's been a while since I last played, you'll probably get better advice from Luciana.
