While I wouldn't call the idea of a sequel dumb [far from it in fact], Verbatim brings up a good point. If your story is written well a sequel shouldn't be imperative for reasons inside the context of the narrative.

But there's a difference between telling a complete story and sequel baiting. Watch Dogs is an example of the latter.

Halo CE manages to tell a complete story while leaving room for a sequel. Same with Jak and Daxter. Or Uncharted.

Indeed, but there's nothing in my post that contradicts that. Leaving room for a sequel =/= necessitating a sequel. Something like Halo 2 or 3, where conflicts explored in the game are legitimately left open, is the problem.

I can see where Halo 2 left shit open just for Halo 3 to be necessary, but I disagree that Halo 2 did it. They basically had to create conflicts (Covenant hierarchy) to make Halo 2 the story it is now.

Verbatim's right, if your story is strong enough to stand on its own then it doesn't need a sequel...at all. Maybe another story set in that same universe, a spin-off, but not a sequel.

There's no "backpedaling" here. Origins is the third in the franchise, deal with it. Prior to Arkham Knight's announcement, everyone was okay with calling it a trilogy.

I assume Knight will be the best in the RS trilogy, but Origins was third in line.

But again, I'm not here to argue semantics. Either add something to the conversation or leave.

But of course if it has sequels in mind then there's no problem!

Of course, no one is denying that. But sometimes devs feel like enjoy the cast of characters or universe to tell another story using the same assets as before (there are multiple reasons for doing this).

The best example I can think of is Uncharted. While I personally don't see why everyone likes them, it's clear that they don't "sequel bait". UC1 is a complete game, and I feel as though UC2 was made because they enjoyed the characters so much and felt they could tell a different story with them.

Well the thing is that I'm not thinking the universe is gone after that character is dead. A new character can take the mantle as hero. Maybe a planet got blown up and that's where the hero was. The attention simply shifts to the view of someone that just saw the planet get obliterated in the next game. It would have to be someone that would be able to get all of the player's questions answered, but I wouldn't think it would be too hard.

I would make the first one great to gather a huge audience, the second one mediocre with some let downs on purpose and the third one to leave a "meh" effect and a long-winded ending while I count the money I made from the franchise.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

Yeah, my bad. I always forget that I didn't play Halo 3 until after Reach came out, and at that point I had grown up quite a bit.

I just always assumed that the context Arby used "were it so easy" in at the end of the game was to reference him essentially saying "were it so easy to kill me" at the beginning of the game, which implied that Arby didn't think Chief was dead.

But now I know that not everyone thought that.
