This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
So I'm just sat there trying to take over Scotland but I get a cease hostilities order. I wait out the order, attack again and he fucking sends another. If I don't comply, I'll be excommunicated. It's fucking annoying.

If not, its pretty much civ
(except the factions in the games aren't from across the world, just specific areas in specific time period),

Ok, that side not messed up my list.
Any who.

It's pretty much civ(without the cartoony shit), The sep7 UN games, and the best RTS you can think of all in one very convenient package.
Playing it on the hardest difficulty was one of my favorite pass times. 
Just play the game or watch people play, which is surprisingly fun to do, and you'll understand.

One youtuber that I can recommend is cosmic contrarian, he does a lot of total war stuff as well as other games on his channel.

i've played civilization, and a number of other RTS games, and they're some of the most boring games i've ever played

i just don't see what's supposed to be fun or stimulating about them

I don't see what's supposed to be fun or stimulating about Pokemon. It's basically babbies first RPG and the amount of thinking and skill required to play the game is but a drop in the bucket compared to any decent PC RTS.

Either assassinate that Pope, or wait for Scotland's approval with the Church go pretty damn low (I'd say 3 crosses max).  That's how I managed to obliterate Hungary. <_<

i just don't see what the problem is

if i made a thread about a game i like, and someone came in and asked why i liked it, i'd answer them

and i'd answer with something more than just "durr, it's fun and challenging"
because i'm courteous like that
