I love Skyrim, but I admit it's a pretty linear game.

It's more a concern of how the games are advertised than anything. Skyrim was hyped up as this huge-ass, "do anything, your actions are important, quests are infinite" game and we get "You can only climb that mountain through following a designated path or taking advantage of terrain-planing, choice of dialogue with no effect, quests are only infinite because a number of quests just start over when you complete them."

And NV being insanely branching is an over-exaggeration. You pick up to two sides (primary, secondary) out of four, giving you one of twelve (eight possibilities for picking two, four for picking one primary) epilogue slide-screens. It's not that difficult, Dragon Age: Origins had it for all of your companions.

Ah. I think this ended up being a criticism for Mass Effect, too, right? Where they give you the illusion of choice, but it ends up not affecting the plot at all, or something like that. That's lame.

That's why Infamous, the first one, is my favorite game that has that choice/karma thing going on. There were only a handful of major events that took place that would massively effect (no pun intended) your karma, but they felt real, nonetheless. To me. And your choices in those few scenarios actually did affect the story quite substantially (which is probably why there's so few).

In terms how the game is as advertised as opposed to how it is when you play it, yeah... Advertising has always been sleazy.

Yeah. I wish Skyrim had more depth. More armour customisation options (Shoulder, upper leg etc), hardcore, weapon degrading/ repair. Those kinds of things would have done wonders for the game. Also, the vampire system is weird. I would think you'd gain powers by drinking bloo and losing by going too long without it.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Still enjoyed it with mods.

TF2 with sprays, but those aren't actually mods in the sense that you're talking about.

Fallout 3 is the best game up there.

The main story is not the most important part of the game, the exploration and side content is, which Fallout 3 excelled at.
Are you kidding? New Vegas beats Fallout 3 in nearly everything. The characters are more interesting, the gameplay is improved, the locations are more unique, and the choices are much more grey. The only thing that you could remotely argue for on F3's behalf is the atmosphere, but I enjoyed NV's atmosphere better anyway.

Wasn't New Vegas, like, really buggy?

I stopped playing Fallout just because I like a sense of direction in games. Also, the combat is just... ugh, so bad. I remember in the beginning of the game, when you have a pipe or some other bludgeoning weapon (I think), which, when you press the button, there's this huge delay, the noise it makes isn't very loud when hitting stuff, and none of the enemies ever flinch, or show ANY indication whatsoever that you're hitting them. It's the least satisfying combat in a game I've ever played.

That was one of the reasons I didn't like NV as much, the Western atmosphere didn't particularly appeal to me personally. That being said, NV was a big game and that wasn't the only atmosphere to be found. It was still Fallout at its core and retained themes of isolation and ruin, and you could argue the Western atmosphere helped establish this even more.

I probably don't give NV as much credit as I might if I played it again, so I'll give it another go, I think.

In NV they made iron sights more viable, but in Fallout 3 they were terrible to the point of optimal combat being carried out in VATS. That made it feel a bit more like a turn based game with action elements, I think. I can understand combat complaints.
I wasn't very thrilled with Skyrim's combat either.

All three are great games. I would love to have a game with the atmosphere of Fallout 3, the scale of Skyrim and the choices-with-actual-effects-and-branching-story of New Vegas.

Has there ever been any question that skyrim is a shallow and casual-centric rpg?
I thought that was agreed upon.

I'd rank FNV as easily better than FO3 (Even with nostalgia factors) if the game didn't give the Legion so much shite.

A better balanced map in favour of the legion, so that siding with Caesar doesn't cockblock you from most of the good quests/merchants/regions of the map. Sure you get a lot of enemies to kill, but when they are dead you are left with nothing but mindless NPCs on respawn :/

Instead of saying the main quest it should say every quest. When you start a quest there are no multiple ways for it to end. For the guilds they all fallow the same story setup. There's no choices to determining an ending. For minor quests you don't have the option of keeping the quest item but still demanding money from the guy that asked you to retrieve something for them. There's also no endings where the guy that asked you to retrieve something threatening you to hand it over to him for free. Then there's the dungeons and caves which all share the same type of layout structure. The path inside them is like train tracks. When you enter one you fallow a path that either takes you to a secrete exit or doorway or it circles back to the entrance.

Wait, but aren't you pretty much locked out of two of NV's factions if you want to enjoy the majority of the content, or something?

I mean, that's kinda not what I was asking, but whatever. I'm well aware that there's bad mods (I think they're all bad), but the fact that you can improve the game with mods is still one of those no-brainer things. So when someone says, "I think the game is better with mods," it's like... Yeah. Duh.
