There were games made in the '80s that had silky smooth gameplay, so I don't really think that's much of an excuse...

Seriously though. HCE isn't that great when nostalgia is removed from the equation.
Gameplay is clunky and stiff. The story isn't anything spectacular; it's more of the same "spoopy mysterious space stuff, kill alien bad guys, oh shit plot twist!, and blow stuff up".

It still hass awful physics and dumb mechanics, even for a 2001 game.

Yeah, in the mid-'90s...

I don't know, I think six years is kind of a long time. You can make all the excuses you want, but I'm just saying, Super Smash Bros. Melee came out the exact same year, and it's still sharp to this day, in terms of game feel.

You don't think technology changed in six years or thought to include the time it takes to develop? No learning process at all there for the devs eh? They must have all been using really old tech and not developing for a new console first of its brand or anything huh. And smash is obviously as demanding as halo. Wut was I thinking?  But I guess I'm just making excuses. Cuz everyone knows what massive halo xbox fanboy I am :P

Eh don't really care. Game was fun. Would probably be the first one I'd go back and enjoy replaying. All it boils down to is 'muh opinions' in the end.

No, it's way more demanding. 60 frames per second, constant shit exploding all over the screen, it's so fast-paced...

Halo: CE might be difficult to process...

Halo: CE might be difficult to process...
...if it was run on N64.
CE was a big open shooter with no loading screens during missions, many enemies fighting you, blowing things up, vehicles flying and driving at you.
So yeah, it was quite a bit more demanding than Smash back then.

Smash could afford to be 60fps because it's literally a few platforms to jump on in a 2.5d perspective.

Yeah, I played the shit out of Halo CE and 2 with a friend when I was younger. I still have all of them.

Don't most people just make the BR your starting weapon anyway? Is that not the standard?
For the playlist BR starts are only in certain playlists. Even in BTB you start out with the AR and pistol. For some odd reason Bungie thought it was a good idea to start people off with weapons that are barley more powerful than a BB gun.
