I will literally always foster a vehement hate for Reach for how shitty and useless it's campaign was.

It did have great gameplay, only MUH MLG fags didn't get on well with it.
It was just a terrible addition to the franchise and changed the formula of multiplayer a bit too much for most vocal people to handle.

A flower which blooms on the battlefield
But seriously though, as someone who basically only cares about the campaigns/stories, Reach is objectively the worst by a looooooooong shot.

If it's by campaign and story, I'd say ODST is the worst. At least we got to see some new environments and shit with Reach, and some actual story, even thought there wasn't much. ODST we get jack and explore the boring streets of New Mombassa.

Gameplay wise, both campaigns are great though.
ODST is one of the better ones.
Reach's was awful. It had awful,  cookie cutter characters that were about as interesting as the shit I had a month ago. The only character worth a damn was Jorge, and he's the first one Bungie killed off.
It had less story than Halo 3, and literally had no plot advancement until the last 2 levels.
Multiple events of the game contradicted the significantly better TFoR novel. An example being that Cortana conveniently had a fragment on Reach and the coordinates for Halo were moved from being found by Blue Team on Sigma Octanus IV to being found on Reach, just to make NOBLE feel even remotely important.

I could go on all day about how Reach's campaign is complete garbage.

i dont mind changing the formula, but it was pretty obvious that bungie didnt give 2 shits about competitive balance. or anything else about that game for that matter. that results in the broken piece of crap that we got. they didnt even update it. it was an abomination, a stain on a once great franchise, and the reason that halo is dead.

reach and h4 hemorrhaged their populations horribly. mcc too. they cant hold a candle to the populations sustained by H2 and H3 in the golden years. ever since being dropped from the MLG circuit, Halo has quite literally been on life support.

Oh, you meant competitive Halo. Well yeah.
Halo as a franchise is anything but dead however.

The population argument is kind of flawed, but whatever.

well yeah, competitive halo is what propped the series up for years. without competitive halo, the franchise will never be able to compete with other (worse) console FPS series. M$/343 may be injecting it with a steady supply of money, but the franchise is still a shadow of its former self

and i think, when it comes to hemorrhaged populations, the argument is fine. the opposite is fallacious- popularity=/=good game, but when a game has a massive initial population that just... disappears in a few months, thats very very very telling.

Competitive Halo was a minority. It's casual players that made up the mass numbers of the populations for 2/3. This has always been the case.

i meant that, without competitive halo keeping the game alive in CE/the early days of H2, we would never have come to this point. of course casuals outnumber the competitive community, but theyre also much more fickle, and not terribly useful either- casuals dont pressure developers to fix their shit. and thats how we end up with lazy rehashed bullshit year after year

Competitive halo was never the minority.

Maybe MLG competitive people. But not just regular competitive people. Ranked playlists were always HUGEly populated.

I still believe that taking out the 1-50 rank system was one of the bigger reasons on why halo took a nosedive.

arenas ranking system was so fucking godawful until the TU ugh. rank based on personal performance instead of w/l is flat out retarded. we needed a happy medium between halo 2's "literally impossible to get a 50" and halo 3's "HEREY OU GET A 50! YOU GET A 50! 50 FOR EVERYONE!" im not sure how mcc's ranking system works but i think its marginally better than we've had before. the h5 beta ranking system was really fucking dumb though

The competitive community has always been the minority. Competitive playlists might have had a healthy population, but they've always been lower than the regular playlists.

There were less competitive playlists, so the numbers looked big because they all congregated there, however there was always more choice for non-competetive play, therefore the majority was spread out between them.

Team slayer used to have like 1/3 of the entire population on h3.....

Team slayer was ranked. You know, competitive.....

Team slayer. Deathmatch always has the vast majority of the playerbase on just about any shooter. Your tryhard league has nothing to do with it.

except team slayer somehow held that massive population despite having competition in the form of team snipers, team swat, and social slayer... at least 3 other playlists to steal the deathmatch population, and yet TS still stood tall. i dont understand your argument.

That was the argument I was making. Team Slayer/Deathmatch will always be the biggest playlist nomatter what. It has nothing to do with PSU's twisted perception of everybody being a competitive tryhard. Plus it is sort of treated as default

Once the anniversary map pack came out the helmet just died out to people. What I love is that epic thread about it that was pinned in the Reacharound forum. There were many people doing stupid shit trying to unlock it. Like some of them thought you had to kill a certain amount of the BOB elites to unlock it. That thread was full retard.

In terms of the amount of content and just being fun? Yes. But unfortunately it was really lacking in competitiveness/balance so everyone hates it.

Those were the main reasons.
