Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
Initial thoughts on Halo Wars 2 are pretty disappointing but unsurprising from the beta.

I'm seriously disappointed in the unit count. HW2 has fewer units on screen than the first game and these games are a generation apart.

Spoiler
Here's HW2's max units. There's only 27 units on screen and it's already as max. These units are also the ones that take up the least amount of unit population.

Spoiler
Here's HW1 with the same units. Notice it's only taking up about 2/3rds of the population.

Spoiler
And for fun here's the max amount of units you can have in HW1. 99 individual units

the best console RTS i've ever played had a maximum of 16 units you could deploy on the battlefield at any given time

unit count is irrelevant when it comes to determining how good an RTS is
The best console RTS I've ever played had a maximum of around 200 units you could deploy on the battlefield at any given time

And LC is right about the unit count being irrelevant to determine a good RTS

Just finished the Halo Wars 2 campaign, was very oddly paced.
Spoiler
We get our Atriox reveal, then we hunt and eventually kill one of his subordinates Decimus. After which nothing really happens for like 5 missions, no cutscenes or anything, and then we shoot the Banished Carrier ship down, and it finally gets interesting from there, but then the game ends 2 or 3 missions after that on a cliff hanger. With nothing really resolved, Atriox is still on the Ark, just minus a Carrier, and now Anders has brought a Halo ring straight to Cortana or something like that.

Yeah it's like they got maybe halfway done writing a great story and got stuck so they just ended it at the Halo 5 tie in.

Nowhere near as egregious as Halo 5, since what we got was at least interesting, but its still half. It's like if Wrath of Kahn ended when Spock beamed them off Genesis and almost every scene with Khan after his first one was left out.

I don't get the people who say this one is less spammy than the first one.

So far I've played like ten games and been fucked in each one by people spamming hornets or some other singular unit.

May as well just play the first one. At least that has a less cluttered visual design.

Best tactic for halo wars was to make a joint counter army. Half anti-air and half anti vehicle while you let your second pal do the muscle work with your support. You cover for your pals weakness in mass single units while he covers for your lesser pushing power.

Assuming it can still work in 2.

If you know, you know.
Playing RTS games online is just cancer comparable to playing Defiance competitive.

Literally just rush the opponent and win. Takes all strategy out of RTS, making Real time "get fucked".
if you are are curious about Definace competitive MP - everyone is level 6000 (max) and uses the Invis + one-shot-kill shotgun (also level out to max). Literally no point in playing it unless you are lvl 6000 and have a maxed out shotgun.

Online no. Because about 120 seconds into the game - guess what happens? My base gets gang raped by a mob of enemy units.

Yeah, counter a rush with turtling - but how the fuck am I meant to turtle if I am in the process of being raped?
And this happens with every rts online I played.

but you don't even have to turtle

for example in starcraft 2 a ling rush can be countered with just your workers, you don't even have to dedicate everything to your defenses. other rushes should be countered by the units you should be making during that time frame.

even in halo wars 1 you could counter the hog and leader rush pretty easily. covies could use their leader + 1 or 2 hunters and unsc could grab a tank to support their hog or two by the time the rush arrives.

Taking a rush is always a gamble. The key is not to panic. I don't know how similiar mechanics are in Halo Wars 2 as opposed to the first. I'm gonna assume that locking a base down and hiding an army inside is still a thing.

As soon as you start the game you should have the setup to be operational for pumping out units as fast as possible to counter a rush. The easiest method is warthogs.

If it's a leader rush, you need three to five warthogs and you need to keep them moving. Their turrets auto target anything even if they're given the command to move. Keep ordering them to move and you can avoid covenant leaders and their powers like cake. Once those turrets are revved they can really whittle down an early game leader.

The second tactic is to have heavier units in the base and let your base take some hits while you fill up the inside and then open up the doors so that rather than pumping out one unit to get fucked, the whole army shows up at once.

Usually with either of these tactics, you buy yourself enough time for teammates to come and help.

Me in HW2:

*Starts game*

*Starts building base with some good fortifications*

"Good so far!*

*Gets some marine units*

*Gets Mini bases*

*Checks in on initial base 50 seconds later*

*Somehow 10 vultures and scorpions laughably gang-rape the base to death in 10 seconds*

"Defeat"

All in the matter of 3 minutes

So is Halo Wars 2 any better than its shitty predecessor? I was significantly disappointed in HW1 and 2 looked like more of the same so I haven't bothered looking into it much.

Looks and plays the same as HW1. The developers didn't learn anything to improve the gameplay/mechanics.

Thanks for the forewarning, I'll be sure to steer clear of this blunder. At least this time it's finally on PC....

I still remember the good time when I killed an entire base and an army of hornets by unpacking all my elephants with upgraded base turrets inside of them outside an enemy base and proceeded to clusterfuck clog the two buddies coming to help the guy with hornets.

Fuck me that rage quit was legendary.

Anybody remember faggots who did fully upgraded prophet hit and runs on your bases just to take out a reactor or factory and then just teleport away?

Bonus points if they kept an army of engineers with them so you were unable to ever kill the prophet no matter how much firepower you tried to sink into him.

Take. That. BACK.

Sure, it wasn't on the same level as Supreme Commander but for a Star Wars RTS, it was great. And at least it had space battles.

no

sure i had fun with it and i occasionally still boot it up to play it, but it's a terrible RTS and i'd say that Halo Wars has more depth and complexity than EaW

grossly innacurate things aside none of what you listed none of that constitutes as depth or complexity

and i didn't even touch the balancing in EaW which was basically nonexistent

you mean other than the absolute supremacy the empire has in space and the redonk abilities the consortium has that make playing as the rebels or empire an absolute pain in the ass? what about the multitude of useless units that are just there to fluff the unit pool and the complete ass job that is ground combat in that game? people pretty much never play the ground combat sections in that game because they're such a chore to play.

try playing against something that isn't the computer on easy, the game is notorious for it's near nonexistent balancing and the fact that it's aged like milk. pretty much the only way people recommend playing that game now is if you use a complete overhaul mod like ICW.
