Fallout 4 seems to be at least mildly amusing, given the discussion surrounding it, and Verbatim's thread of his FO3 playthrough has really spiked my interest; it seems the game is filled with interesting things and and feels alive with interesting characters which is ironic since it takes place in a postapocalyptic wasteland.

Since I've never actually had any outstanding, but even dissapointing experiences with Bethesda games - like Skyrim, where I gave in the hype and realised far too late that I was caught in a mindless skinnerbox of dungeoneering, selling and crafting or Dishonored which had a interesting world, which sadly never gripped me - I didn't really see any reason to really get into the Fallout series.
But, according to what I've heard, this is the best Bethesda has to offer franchise-wise.

And I decided to give it a chance. Now I ask you which Fallout game I should start with; New Vegas, 3 or 4? And tell me why - I'll be more interested to hear the reasons why I should play one over the other rather than just opinions alone.

The only things I've seen about the games are some Gopher vids and E3 footage, so I am fairly new.
Maybe I'll even make a thread where I document my experiences like Verb does. Or maybe not, iunno.

Thanks in advance, lads.

Start with 3. It's an awesome game and then it means going forward to Vegas, you'll appreciate the step-up it is.

I have a code for Fallout 3 on XB1 backwards compatibility, if you want it.

I'd start with 3, if you can't stand the clunk don't feel bad just move onto the newer titles.

It's aged like a dead cat under a radiator, but it's still a good game.

If 3 isn't your cup of tea, FNV is a step up from it easily (mechanics wise) so that should be more accessible.

Then if you've played 3/NV move onto 4 and marvel at how far the game has evolved e.e

I think I can handle old games. If the mechanics are solid then I can cope with it, I guess.

So, in short, you recommend playing all of the games.

Fair enough.

If you can get some enjoyment out of 3, then you'll easily love New Vegas and 4. The gameplay mechanics consistently get better every game.

Also, make sure to get the Broken Steel DLC, if none else (though they're all worth getting)

It allows you to play past the ending and continue the main quest.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
3 is a good starting point. That way, if you like the game, you can move on to New Vegas (which improved in a lot of ways), then Fallout 4 if you're still interested in the setting.

Wasteland is also good to look into, it's the inspiration for Fallout and shares a lot of similarities. It's an isometric game, but Wasteland 2 just came out a short while ago and shouldn't have difficult controls.

But I guess in the end -- Sort of feels like everyday its harder to stay happy where you are. There are all these ways to look through the fence into your neighbor's yard.

Why even risk it? its safer to stay distant.
None :^)

Ah good, well some people get very finicky over it so if you are prepared to handle a bit of clunk it'll be fine >_>

Indeed I do, although all three are incredible timesink games.

Hundreds and hundreds of hours poured into each one and there is still shit I can go back and do >_>
(It's speculative for fallout 4, but not unfounded at this point)

So... I guess I'm going to have to pick up after your horrendous mistakes on here too?
I haven't played the first two, but I was big on FO3, and a small portion of NV.

FO4 is awesome, though.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
3 first.

Otherwise you'll start with NV or 4, and won't enjoy the older titles because "X feature from NV/4 isn't there" or "why is this bugged game still popular to the lesser bugged new ones".

Plus it generally sets up the story of things, and NV builds on it. 4 just builds from 3 from what I've seen so far, but the mechanics and features are leagues ahead of the previous games.

Oh yeah. All the games (story-wise) are pretty much separate frommeach other and don't require prior knowledge to understand. NV in particular is set on the other side of the county to 3/4

I'd still play Fallout 3 just for context in dialogue that references it in Fallout 4.

The game looks fine in 1080p ultra and if you want to install the Fellout mod there's that.
