Who here has downloaded and played the 1.5 patch? It's incredible. There was always something missing in vanilla Fallout 4, and I feel like that piece was immersion. The game was whole and the gameplay was fun, but the world seemed so simple and barren.

But this mode changes that. With no fast travel, you see so much more, and you get a true feel for the world. Even radiant quests have a weight and importance to them, it's not just popping in somewhere, killing people, and popping back. The unique journies you take from Goodneighbor to Bunker Hill to Diamond City are full experiences in and of themselves. And that's not even touching the diseases, realisic damage scale, and basic needs additions. This is something that should've been packaged with the game day one, and in my opinion, the true way to play Fallout 4. Whereas other Fallouts are primarily role playing games, Fallout 4 is now more or less an apocalypse survival simulator. And it's amazing.

You mean the fact that bottles aren't reusable? Doesn't make much sense, but it's more of a balance thing. You're right that the game still has plenty of problems, though, most of them in the dialogue/choices department.

I don't think it's much about balance. If survival is supposed to add realism, you should be able to keep a bottle.

I don't think it's much about balance. If survival is supposed to add realism, you should be able to keep a bottle.
It's already been stated as an intentional feature and not a bug from Bethesda, so it's definitely about balance. If the bottles didn't go away, you could pretty much just have unlimited purified water, which would render the whole thirst system useless. Survival adds realism, but at the end of the day, it's still a video game.

One that's appropriately scaled to your level and you aren't using a trash-gun or a baton etc

It'd be nice if a headshot feels like a headshot, because even with the multipliers and the like it pisses me off to nail someone in the eyesocket with a .50 and have them laugh it off <_<

It'd be nice if a headshot feels like a headshot, because even with the multipliers and the like it pisses me off to nail someone in the eyesocket with a .50 and have them laugh it off <_<
If you shoot a leveled Raider anywhere but the head once, even the torso, they're nearly dead. Like, 80% of their health gone. If you have something like a shotgun at close range or a high-power rifle, even that alone will kill them. With a headshot, pretty much any gun in the game will one shot a raider. Things like Super Mutants are different, they take three or four body shots to bring down. A headshot with a decent rifle (or any headshot with a sneak attack) will one shot them, though.

But on the other side, you can take maybe three direct hits before you die. If you're unprepared and you zip around a corner, just to see a room with three raiders in it, you're dead. You can pop all the jet/psycho/stims you want in that situation, but you're still going to die. It makes combat a lot more stealth oriented of course, but also puts a LOT more emphasis on positioning, drawing out enemies, and avoiding fights altogether.

A lot of people took issue with the whole sleep to save thing, but I love it. It's the only real way to give death meaning. In the vanilla game, if you see a big fire and activity in the distance, you can quicksave and check it out. If it turns out to be a big Gunner base and they shoot you down, no big deal, you just reload. In survival, you have to make tactical choices like whether or not to investigate the camp, how to do so, whether to just scout it out or attack it, and such, because you're fearing for your life. And when you narrowly escape the clutches of death, it feels so much more rewarding than in the base game. It's definitely a big change, and I've had to repeat several parts upwards of four times (getting Reba II was so hard), but in general, sleep to save makes everything more dramatic and meaningful.

As for glitches, I never had any game-stopping bugs when I even played F4 the first time. So far, so good.

Ah good, I would be fine with the sleep-save system as long as the game is stable. I had a few crashes a little while back, nothing major but it would steam my jimmies to have to redo a long quest because of a bluescreen.

Got the same gamebreaking glitch on both runs of the game I did, lost a total of 12 hours because of it. So I have different problems with FO4 than just "immersion".

I don't even really see Fallout 4 as a Fallout game, it's way too different from the established formula and feel. But it's still an excellent game, even moreso with this update.

I don't even really see Fallout 4 as a Fallout game, it's way too different from the established formula and feel. But it's still an excellent game, even moreso with this update.
It's a good game, yeah. I prefer to look at it as more of a semi-canon spinoff.

I always hear this complaint, which is weird to me. I've only had one crash in the entire time I've played the game, and it was like an hour into my first character.

I don't know what I'm doing differently.

I've crashed like, five times in my close to 400 hours of playtime.

I like the bed system when I am playing, but it means you need to know you'll be playing for a while to play. If they allowed save on sitting in a chair, I'd be fine with that.

Everything else I've enjoyed a lot. Five hours in and I'm yet to go past starlight is a good indicator of longevity. It's really put more role playing into it/ it feels more immersive as an experience to play. I'm really enjoying it so far.

I'll probably switch to my main for FH though.

You're getting lucky.

While I don't get crashes due to my machine being able to brute force a lot of stuff I do have a few quests that bug out for my first few tries every time without fail.

I'm about to start a file. I'm mostly worried about food and water. The save thing is a little annoying but if I'm constantly having to spend my time searching for food and water to live, instead of actually completing quests and going new places... I dunno. It just seems like you're going to have to spend a lot of time searching for things like food and water instead of "playing" the game if you know what I mean.

Food is extremely useful even when not playing survival, but that's only when it's cooked.
I never used the cooking feature before survival, now I see it's super useful.

But yeah, food/water is everywhere, no one's going to spend a lot of their time trying to find it.

Pretty excited to play this. I hope the damage is something like the realistic ballistics and damage mods for Fallout 3/NV

Though, just remembering some of the fights in this game... I dread getting to those parts on Survival.

When it was in beta, I did see people saying that you get hungry and thirsty really fast, did they change that at all? Cos I don't really want to be eating and drinking basically continuously

Yeah, it increases the chance to get certain diseases. But you can also take (no joke, I love it) herbal supplements to increase your disease immunity.

I didn't have access to the beta, so I don't really have a point for reference. But you get hungry at a relatively reasonable rate; I lived out a regular day (no fighting or exploring) to test stuff, and it's a pretty standard breakfast/lunch/dinner thing. The shitty effect is thirst, though. You don't have to drink a lot at all if you're just living, but using any kind of chem seems to instantly bump you up a thirst level.
