Sure, I don't disagree with any of that. But you could say the exact same thing for several other competitive games.

Well, not quite, because my whole point I'm trying to make here is that fighting games tend to have the highest degree of variation when compared to any other competitive genre, with the exception of RTS games which I already brought up. That's what I'm arguing.

That's 3 official Prima guides on games hosted at Evo, including a Street Fighter V guide detailing all characters, moves, strategies, counters, frame data, combos and tactics to deal with situations.

You'll notice in my post that I never said there weren't any strategy guides for fighting games--I even acknowledged their existence. What I said was that none of them will teach you how to win, which is typically what a strategy guide is meant to do. A Super Mario Bros. strategy guide can teach you not only the ins and outs of the game, but also how to beat it. A Street Fighter strategy guide will contain concepts and ideas--that's it. There is no, "Do this combo to win the match," or anything like that. The onus is on the player to put in the effort to win, and I guess my underlying argument here is that fighting games take more effort to get good at than basically any other genre.

Knowing all a character's moves isn't going to do you any good if you don't know how to use them.

What you say is all true, but I feel it applies to several of the most competitive games. And I think that what I feel the games lack has to do with the limits that come with what's essentially a default 2D (usually) flat arena, the breathing room between matches and gameplay that primarily relies on quick reflexes and reads of your opponent. They're great games and top tier esports, but they've just never really been my thing, I guess, even though I still enjoy watching them and find a lot of the plays really amazing.

I honestly don't feel like the 2D plane harms the game's depth at all, actually. Even then, as you acknowledged, there are 3D fighters, and they're pretty in-depth in their own right as well, if not more so.

Anyway, you've conceded that it may just not be your thing, which sounds a lot more fair than claiming that the game's lack depth for whatever reason. I know you said "depth" may not have been the right word to use at first, but that just felt like thin coat of sugar to me.

But yeah, watching top players do their thing is pretty extraordinary. It's the only e-sport I can find any enjoyment in watching.

What games would you suggest, Verb? I usually watch Street Fighter, Melee and Tekken when I do watch fighting game competitions, but I'm open to suggestions.

I'd love them to have some event after where the winners (or top seeds) of each game play against each other in each one. Would be funny to watch.

His Sheik has been confined to the labs for the most part. The nerfs really fucked with his follow-up game. Might be waiting to crack her out later in the bracket but if that's the case, he would've used her before he got sent to Losers.
