I've noticed that different types of videogames handle difficulty in certain ways.

Part of the fun of playing action games like Devil May Cry on a higher difficulty is enemies changing tactics, doing more damage and taking a lot more skill to beat, there's a real sense of satisfaction from mastering it. Rather than just making enemies do more damage and having more health they actually change it up to keep things fresh.

In games like Fallout everything's just a fucking bullet sponge.Shooting is so clunky it just becomes about how fast you can sluggishly shuffle from side to side and pump as many healing items as you can and I don't really get anything out of it. Maybe some people get a kick out of it but I sure don't. Really not sure what else they could do in increasing the difficulty though, apart from hardcore mode.

What is your preferred system of difficulty increases in games?

I definitely prefer “skill” based increments where your enemies become more trigger happy/tactics oriented within reason.

Bungie games have never been that good at handling difficulty increases and always relied on making enemies spongey as fuck while you’re made of paper. They also give the enemies tools the player can’t use (impossibly high rates of fire and accurate range on their weapons, near frame perfect reaction times, etc) and it’s really unfun to deal with. It’s still humanly possible to manage but you need to play ultra lame and spend 90% of the time behind cover and playing defensively. Especially with the Jackal snipers in Halo 2 you pretty much need to know their spawn locations at all times, and peek to get a headshot within 2 frames or you’re dead. It also limits your available/viable weapons combos to 3-4 at most.

What made the Unreal tournament AI so good was the damage tables remained equal, but on higher difficulties they timed rushing key spawn points to near perfection and placed a greater emphasis on you denying them access to better power ups and flanking. On InstaGib matches there was always that one enemy that would get you the frame you’re out of cover, but if you were good at strafing you could normally make them miss 2-3 shots and give yourself a better chance at winning. In essence, being better at movement, positioning and aiming got you a higher success rate. The bots from ‘99 are still as fun as ever to play against.

It’s not just shooters either.

Mario Kart AI handles difficulty like a sloppy shit and just gives them outright better stats than you across the board on top of the unfair rubber banding that you can’t even use to catch up if you fall behind. Again, it gives the AI tools the player can’t use and forces you to rely on good RNG to win some races where skill alone won’t cut it. Memories of that Fuckstain Toad robbing me of 90 consecutive 3-stars on the last lap of Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 8 will forever be ingrained in my brain. I haven’t gone near the special cup since I finally completed it.

Compare this to, say, Forza Motorsport 2 where the AI becomes better at defending their position, taking the racing line and still not being unfairly good.

I prefer first system over the second, however there is one more difficulty system, where instead of making enemy more powerful game goes and restrains player in some way, making game harder to deal with. For example in first Crysis on hardest difficulty crosshair on screen was turned off, in Resident Evil 5 on pro mode there was no ammo lying arround. It`s usually used with first two systems, but I think there are games that rely just on that.

Every racing game I play I put the difficulty to the highest, especially in Forza because the games are way too easy on the lowest difficulty levels.

I mainly play FPS games on Hard. Like in DOOM, to me the game is balanced perfectly on Hard when it comes to the damage you do and damage you take. The AI isn't flat out retarded either and there's just enough health and armor to make it challenging.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
I think difficulty should apply to enemies as well. STALKER and Metro for example.

I usually don't play games on high difficulties because of this exact reason. It's like they basically half your damage and health, and double the enemies. Does it offer more challenge? Yeah, but it's not fair, not what I'm looking for. I've played some Mods, where they equalize all the enemy health. So they all have the same as each other, and you. Any headshot means they're dead, or you are if they land one on you. There was also one where they could bleed out over time and die. I'd love a game where the damage model is extremely realistic. Like a survival game. You don't use many bullets, because there aren't many left. And realistically, a bullet is going to bring someone down, no matter where it hits.

they increased the AI’s ability to swerve to an impossibly high level and they have like a 100% hit rate with green shells, but the bounce on those things targets nearby racers anyway. But yeah it’s always known for its shenanigans but 8 is easily the worst offender

I appreciate examples like Dark Souls, in which different/more enemies spawn, and many enemies have access to a larger moveset.

Shooters are tough though, because shooters are all pretty basic when it comes to controls and player mechanics; you aim and shoot, regardless of whether that's the Duck Hunter gun or Destiny's supers.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
W@W Veteran was the most difficult I've played simply by ramping up the damage output, recruiting soldiers that were perfect pitchers and giving each of them a crate of grenades.

Coupled with the level-loadouts of enemies and certain scenarios requiring you to push to a point otherwise the enemies won't stop respawning, levels like Blowtorch & Corkscrew were infamous in their difficulty. You couldn't advance more than a few feet before a jap-in-a-box popped out of a floor trap, shot you with a high powered bolt action rifle, whilst simultaneously throwing a pre-cooked grenade at your feet. I gave up on this level on Veteran for months after I got shot to near-death and died by being bonked on the head with a grenade being thrown at me.

The final levels, Heart of the Reich + Downfall just spawned enemies at you until you pushed up enough, which was nigh impossible without sprinting forward, cowering in a corner and spraying at anyone nearby until your retarded AI came forward to end the respawning script for that area. Oh, and fighting in the Reichstag where desperate Nazis would start firing RPG's at you with massive OHK splash damage. You just had to time your own soviet-ally respawner to send a wave ahead to get rocketed, so you could sprint out and shoot them all whilst reloading and then get back to cover before everything else focused on you.

Metro 2033 and LL was by far the easiest Hard difficulties I've played. Ammo and air-time for going above ground are far more scarce, as is the currency which are just better bullets, so you have to actually take into account do you want a lot of bullets to kill enemies but with scavenged guns rather than paid ones, or do you want to save bullets and go stealthy to save up money for stealth attachments or throwing knives, etc. Since much of the game can be done without killing anyone (and even some levels not killing the mutant animals too), it's far easier to do a "stealthy hard mode" than a "guns blazing, kill everything - hard mode" While the latter had weaker enemies because all bullets kill, enemies would react faster and conglomerate on your position better, making it a lot more difficult to fight out.

The ultimate hard mode for the game made it more immersive too, by just removing the HUD entirely. From intro to end, you have to remember the control scheme (negligible if you've played enough recently ), second guess your ammo supply ("Is this my last mag/grenade, or my second last?"), and count off your airtime with a watch on your arm that beeps when you only have to change filters for your mask, which is now a manual-operation only (failure to do so results in you pulling off your mask and dying if you don't replace it in 10 seconds). This also included the odd quicklime event if a mutant leapt onto you, or you had to stab some ambusher, which fortunately was just the knife button.

To go along with this, NG+ or an unlockable/ clearly defined "harder than intentional" difficulty is the best way to go.

I still feel like a jerk and accidentally getting crushed by the falling pillar the end of HotR when some guy was about to win the competetive co-op match and snatching the win away from him on my second go. It was the last trophy I needed so it felt good, but damn he must have been salty...
