If it's enjoyable like Bloodborne and the original Dark Souls then it's going to be great.

You forget the DLC/updated ending which was

Get the Crowns of the Fallen Kings and lose the undead curse
Walk into the darkness and refuse to rekindle the flame and repeat the cycle
Break the cycle that's plagued the world forever

The DS3 premier trailer shows the crown and it implies it breaks.

I'm fairly sure that the purpose of the Crowns was so that someone might escape from the fate of perpetual rebirth and decay, rather than destroying the Cycle. The theme of the games is that the world is fucked no matter what you do, it's just that through some sometimes menial actions or varied soul destroying labor, you can either speed up or stave it off inevitability as long as possible. Crowns are tools allowing one to step outside of that box, except with the chains of undeath keeping you tied close enough that true freedom isn't feasible.

All in hopes of one day breaking it, because it's a fantastic first step.

That's an interesting outlook on it. I always thought he was gonna find a way to break it, because when then Emerald Herald says something like that, he grips his fists angrily or determinedly, and sets off into the dark.

Plus, Dark Souls 3 might not (hopefully) be repeating it.

How you cannot like things like Gwyn's theme, Biggie Smalls, Sif, and others is shocking if you like DS2 music. At least the DLC music.
