I was just starting on my character to 100% Dark Souls 1 to have 100% in all 3, but maybe I'll just wait til this comes out. Although once this comes out I'll probably never play the original so maybe I should.

100% as in all trophies, or 100% as in EVERYTHING?

Just trophies, and I usually keep 1 of every item if it drops

Don't make the same mistake I did and accidentally get 2 of the same Abyss Greatswords. Made my 3rd playthrough pointless haha

Honestly, as long as your not using magic I have no issue with how you play.
do utility spells/pyromancies count

power within, cast light, aural decoy, etc.
[snip]
It's always been a strange mentality for me, and it's never quite been how I saw it.

I don't like using offensive magic much, simply because it's not my style, but instead of viewing it as a way to make the game easier, I view it as me making the game more difficult. The game is providing me with tools to beat it with relative ease, and in my eyes, whatever tools it provides you with is 100% fair game.

If they didn't want me to cheapen the experience by using magic, they wouldn't have made magic so powerful. If it's somehow a crazy oversight, then that's certainly not the player's fault.

I know you're not claiming that it's an unfair mechanic, but if one is so concerned with making the game too easy for themselves, where do you draw the line? I could easily argue that anyone's playstyle is baby easy mode because they're not doing a SL1 Depraved run with no weapons, couldn't I?

I have a friend who is a self-described "hardcore casual." He loves video games, but specifically chooses to be as casual as possible, because that's what's most fun to him. He'll never play anything competitive, and he always plays on the easiest mode possible (even in games like Persona, which basically just removes the ability to lose). He simply doesn't care about being challenged; he only wants to have fun.

Despite this, I've been trying to get him into Dark Souls for a long time, because I think there are several aspects of it that would appeal to him (namely the world, lore, atmosphere, story, etc). Although he's interested, he's always told me that he'd specifically go out of his way to make the game as cakewalky as possible with lots of magic and summoning NPCs for every boss, because dying hundreds of times to bosses he refuses to "get good" at fighting is not his idea of fun. So, we've agreed to do a co-op playthrough where I'm essentially taking care of all the bosses for him while he assists me with magic spells, because he values that aspect of the game a lot more. The teamwork.

I've tried explaining to him that much of the game's appeal is the triumph of overcoming these obstacles yourself, but he's just not interested in that whatsoever. He explained that his playstyle couldn't possibly cheapen the experience for him, because he simply would not have even tried the game had there not been ways to make it easier. He's well-aware that his mentality will not be respected among veterans of the series, but he doesn't mind. The reason he labels himself as a hardcore casual is because that's what everyone else called him, but instead of getting bent out of shape over it, he took it in stride and proudly accepts the label.

And honestly, I respect him a lot for sticking with his waterpistols. At the end of the day, I'd rather him play Dark Souls with me and have fun with it than have him go it (mostly) alone and put it down after deeming it "too hard."

So yeah, what I'm trying to say is that I just don't really care how anybody plays. Unless you're cheating or using mods, I couldn't be fucked what you do to win. There are certainly more impressive ways to beat the game, and I'm certainly not gonna resort to using magic or summons any time soon, but if the one thing preventing somebody from playing a great game is the difficulty, and they have an option to curb it for their sanity's sake, I won't begrudge them that. I can't imagine lambasting somebody over a preferred playstyle.

wanderer clothes/eastern armor, depending on whether i want fast rolls or more defense
winged spear/butterfly horn + grass crest or eagle shield (still trying to find a stronger greatshield that suits me)
power within, fire orb, combustion, cast light, aural decoy
wolf/cloranthy ring with havel's
black bow of pharis for aggroing grouped enemies individually (is that considered cheesy too? idc)
emphasis on VIT, END, and DEX

i shortly discovered that dark souls is a game that rewards patience and defensive play, and being able to attack while shielding is sexy as hell, so it wasn't long before i decided to exploit that—power within might be a strange spell to use, but it's carried me through some of the tougher bosses in the game, and i feel like a badass kaio-ken warrior using it, so that's a thing

i also have a boner for stamina regen, and it would be dope if there was a greatshield with that effect

when i get back to playing, i still have to fight nito who i only have a single attempt on

he seems pretty tough though, so i'm actually considering putting on the ring of fap, which i've been saving

Yeah i'm once again going to have to call bullshit once again when Melee build users have less required stat investments, greatsheilds, Hyper armor, more resitances, more HP and a plethora of spin-2-win memeblades that cheese the game as hard as any ranged build can. Hell, half the people that bitch about sorcerers went through the game spamming lightning spears and +10 Pyromancies.

And who the hell said people play sorcerer because they wanted a meta build? I did it just because I like to play with ranged combat and I don't want to pay for arrows constantly.  Right now I'm doing a Dark Souls 2 playthrough with an Overwatch Reaper Cosplay and another Archer cosplay in Dark Souls 3 because I just like to play ranged.

As for not having to learn enemies patterns that's an exaggeration. A good portion of the time the enemies will rush you and you will not get time to cast. Cast speeds rage from Greatsword speed to ultragreatsword speed, even at 40 INT, so you have to learn bosses patterns to get away from them.
The only time I ever did feel like I actually cheesed a boss using magic was Second Stage Ornstien, because for some reason he plays incredibly passive.

I'm just gonna echo what flee said. It's frustrating to me to hear people don't like the game when they get carried by others and use op and broken mechanics to cheese the game.

The souls series is special to me and even though I know not everyone is going to enjoy it it's disheartening to hear why they don't like it. I've been trying to get a friend of mine to play for years because I think he'd enjoy it but he's put off by the difficulty and wants to look up walkthroughs and strategies before he plays.

My first blind playthrough of dark souls is still one of the best gaming experiences of my life.

Loaded up DS1 again, let's see if I can crank at least 1 playthrough out before DSR is released. I don't get why I struggle so much with Ornstein and Smough, is it DS1's weird dodging?

STATUS UPDATE:

Have made my way to the first bell with relative ease, under 10 deaths so far. Decided that only 1 plunge attack would suffice for the Taurus Demon, and my rusty ass nearly got myself killed right near the end. That thin wall is the only thing that makes the fight have anything remotely resembling a challenge, it's easy to get stuck on a bit of rubble or roll right into it.

Grabbed the Claymore as soon as I could, and began pumping all of my souls into improving it with Andre. Got my shit handed to me multiple times by that asshole with the UGS up on the tower before I called it quits. I'll return to kick his ass later. Managed to backstab the boar twice in a row, lucky me.

The +4 Claymore absolutely demolished everyone in the Undead Parish. 2-shotting Balder Knights is always good, and the Gargoyles didn't fare much better either. I picked up Havel's ring after getting to Darkroot, so know I'm rocking the full Elite Knight set with the Grass Crest shield. I'm pretty much sorted for the rest of the game now, I think. Next stop is Pinwheel.
