Is a mod fixing a mechanic and improving connectivity still bad, in your opinion?
insofar as its essentially a patch to a set of imperfections which was the developers' job to fix, yes, that's still bad in my opinion

but given that the game is basically shelved at this point, because it's an old game with several newer installments, i guess i wouldn't judge anyone for using it, especially when you've already beaten the game normally several times over, i imagine

personally, when a game is finished and isn't receiving anymore official updates, i choose to embrace its flaws as characteristic, part of the finished product, and a necessary part of the overall experience

the fact that you can't pause when offline is one of the worst things about the game, but i would never install a mod that lets me do that, because i just accept how the game was designed, even if i don't love every aspect of it

Not being able to pause is objectively one of the best parts of the game
but there are ways to please both sides without stepping on anyone's toes in the process

you could have an option in the options menu to enable/disable pausing when playing offline

anyone who wants to pause can simply enable it, and anyone who doesn't want to pause can simply disable it (they could also just, you know, not pause, but i know that's far too much change for the average dark souls fan who doesn't even play offline anyway)

imagine that the option to turn off blood did not exist

if someone then said, "i don't like blood, i want an option to turn off the blood," how would you respond to that, and how would you expect such a person to be treated by the dark souls community as a whole

It doesn't change any gameplay mechanic, but just makes the multi-player work better on a 6 year old game with low player count. Nothing as frustrating as knowing there's people online and in your area looking to play together but being unable to because the game pooled you with just 2 other players that aren't even in your part of the game.
well like i said, i don't really care what you do with your games at the end of the day

i feel like this whole viewpoint of yours just stems from your prioritization of personal enjoyment over purity of art, and that's fine, that's what most people feel

i don't, though, and that's why i wouldn't be okay with doing that for myself

the way i see it, if a game is finished, and it's still not perfect, then it's doomed to be imperfect forever, and that's okay, because the art value is still there, and you can still appreciate what they managed to do right

whereas a modded game has an art value of 0, because you've reduced the artistry of the game to a means of entertainment rather than something to be marveled as an audience member or non-participant

that goes for all aspects of the game, from gameplay down to the smallest piece of infrastructure

it's not my art, it's their art, and it's just not for me to touch

the first line of this segment was deleted for some reason

i edited it back in, but it was late, so i'll just repost it because i think it's an interesting question that speaks to the psychology of your average dark souls fan or fanboy
