This thread has inspired me to give this game another shot.

So I'm downloading it on my 360 now. I'm surprised it's only 3GB, I'd expect it to be a lot more.
Apparently, I've inspired at least four or five other people, too. So many DaS threads on the front page right now.

Yeah. Seeing more people who actually give advice on the game rather than being total pricks has been part of why I'm giving it another shot.

Plus,I want to understand what people are talking about in this thread.

Have you ever been literally two pixels away from recovering your souls, and you just die?

Thankfully I didn't lose that much. Still, fuck this mechanic.

Recovery is pretty forgiving really.
Except when you lose it in a boss area.

If souls weren't as important as they are, I wouldn't consider it an issue. But they're everything.

As long as you don't die prior to the furthest you got before, you can keep trying until you survive. Usually the biggest payouts from boss kills are immediately followed by a fire. Everything else can just be farmed again. Game gives the player fair chance to get it again. (Except for boss areas, but even then you know the risk you take when you move through fog)

Gotta disagree on this one. Dark Souls isn't all too punishing for death if you don't take risks upon yourself. It's not like Isaac or Nuclear Throne where you can lose a run to RNG spawning a car on top of you.

There ARE some instances of losing stuff to weird AI cheese or some poorly designed areas.

With my primary weapon broken, I wondered how exactly I was supposed to get out of this. I could consume a couple more of my itemized souls, buy some repair powder, and be done with it--except the merchant's place is still guarded by a couple spear-wielders. I have to figure out some other way.

Then I remembered Big Boss telling me about the dexterity weapon in the graveyard--I was sure I picked everything that was to pick up there, but he was courteous enough to put the weapon's name in a spoiler tag in case I haven't found it yet.

I looked through my inventory, making sure to look closely at the requirement parameters for each weapon.

Weapons
- Broken Straight Sword (I should probably just get rid of this.)
- Straight Sword Hilt (Same here.)
- Zweihander (Requires me to forgo my shield--that's a no-go for me.)
- Scimitar (Broken.)
- Morning Star (Two-handed until I level up my strength, which requires souls. Not worth it right now.)
- Winged Spear (Yep, this is probably what Big Boss was talking about.)
- Talisman (What the fuck even is this? Don't answer that. I need lots of Faith to wield it properly...)

I also found this Wooden Shield that actually has more stability than my Caduceus Round Shield--it's not as good at resisting magic damage, but I haven't met any magic-wielders yet, so... All right, I guess.

So, I have two options--Morning Star, or Winged Spear--both of which require both my hands, until I get stronger. Turns out, the Morning Star requires of me less effort than the Winged Spear would--so that's what I opted for.

My equipment
Right Hand: Morning Star
Left Hand: Wooden Shield (not in use)
Usable Item: Estus Flask, Fire Bomb (4), Homeward Bone (5), Binoculars, Black Firebomb (5)
Arrow: None
Bolt: None
Ring: Tiny Being's Ring

Still wearing all my Wanderer garb.

I realize I could've put one of my Homeward Bones to use earlier. I didn't because I panicked and forgot about them. Oh well.

As soon as I boost my strength, I'll be able to wield the Morning Star properly, so... Back to grinding, I suppose.

*presses triangle*

HOLY SHIT
this thing DEMOLISHES

>striking enemies to death while they're trying to heal themselves

YEAH, EAT SHIT

It's really slow, of course, but that only makes it all the more satisfying when you land a blow. Fuckers drop in a matter of two or three hits. SO satisfying. I don't even need a shield--this thing blocks well enough on its own. On top of that, I'm also learning more and more how the combat system works.

The spear-wielders were giving me trouble earlier, but now I understand their attack patterns: They're slimy bastards who only attack you if you don't have your weapon readied. Once they see an opening, they strike--from there, swerve to the left and punish. They can't take a fierce hit from the Morning Star.

Picked up two more weapons: a regular spear, and a short sword. Not bad at all--I need all the weapons I can get.

As well as this grinding session has been going, I still have an issue with the lock-on system. The game still has trouble switching targets when I ask it to. It hasn't put me in a bad situation yet, but I feel as though it may bite me in the ass in the future.

Still, bashing people around with the Morning Star has been the most fun I've had in this game so far.

I'll have enough souls for everything I want in no time.

With 750 souls, I earned just enough to level up and raise my strength stat. Now I can use my shield along with my mace. My next goal, of course, is for 3500 souls. I'm shooting for both the powder and the box this time--but I'm not worried. I'm much stronger now. No more reckless deaths for me.

I wish I could at least take screenshots of this game, so I could show you my character and stuff... Oh well.

Phew. Did it. Got a little bit powder. AND a repairbox as well. I used the powder, and...

...it doesn't even repair it all the way

son of a bitch

Oh well, that's fine. At least I can use it now--but, honestly? I like using the Morning Star a lot better. I think I might stick with it--or at least, I'll keep both of them equipped. I think I can equip two weapons in one hand, anyway.

Right now, I'm gonna try and see if I can take out the black knight. If I can't, I won't worry about it--but I really really wanna kill him. I think that would make this update complete if I did.

All right... All right... This isn't going too well. :P But it's okay--clearly, the black knight is completely out of my way for a reason. I can probably just go back and fight him when I'm stronger. I know that makes me a casualina, but I don't really care. I'm getting bored of trying.

Next time, I'll see what I can do about the Taurus Demon (finally).

This was my first "live" update--I'm experimenting a little bit.

No, it's fair. Completely. That's not what I mean.

It just wastes your time--and that's just not cool with me.

The game doesn't respect that you don't have a finite time on this planet, and I just take umbrage with that.

I'd maybe reccommend putting off fighting the Black Knight until you get more humanity saved up, because it boosts your item discovery when you've consumed it, and they drop some good stuff.

Yeah the Winged Spear was what I meant, and its good for combat in tight corridors where a bunch of guys are coming at you and you can poke them to death one by one, while keeping a safe distance.

Neither does Fallout annoyingly enough. Any big open world games don't.

I feel like diving in again, but I dunno.

I suppose now would be a good time to record my stats, so you guys can see what I got going on.

See Verb. All these years and you're having fun with Dark Souls, did you really think such a miracle would ever bestow this planet?

Yeah it's DLC. Adds a few new bosses and areas to explore. Worth it if you want extra challenge and really get into the lore. There's a damn neat story in there that will hit you harder if you piece together the stuff you find throughout the game. I just watched videos on the story and thought it was really good, but you'll probably try and piece it together yourself.
