How do you even get in? I've got the first bonfire, but the two doors on either side of the room are locked.

You gotta progress down the side area by that statue with the hollows praying at it. Outside the entrance to that bonfire.

The ending I picked was

Spoiler
Usurp the fire. Prolonging the age of fire just seems like a way of trying to hold onto the past and not accept change. I felt like it would be beneifical to help usher in a new age.

Spoiler
I haven't beaten it, but are the endings seriously just the same as in 1 & 2?
That's how the lore in dark souls works

It wouldn't make sense if they made it different

It was pretty heavily marketed as a conclusion to the series. I love the game, but it feels like a retread of Dark Souls 1 and the ending just solidifies that.

Yeah, that's why it's disappointing that it was marketed as linking the fire for good and ending the undead curse. At the beginning of the game they flat out tell you that's why you're offering the souls of lords to the thrones.

It's not a conclusion, it's just the last game.

Farming the Dark set. It looks so decrepit...

Yeah I just got the helmet and it looks pretty awful. Plus it makes your head really tiny.

I look like an actual corpse

The entire series has been hinting at the end of the age of fire, and curing the undead curse. Miyazaki has said in several interviews that it's a conclusion to the Dark Souls plot. Returning the Lords of Cinder to their thrones is almost blatantly explained to stop the coming end of the age of fire.
Spoiler
There are apparently the standard fire/dark endings, and then two others which have significantly different ramifications for the lore, so while there isn't a canon ending, there are definitely more than the regular two choices for the cycle.

I'm going to believe that the final boss is
Spoiler
the pseudo-reincarnation of all the previous Lords of Cinder + the Chosen Undead. The armor somewhat resembles the elite knight set (arguably the signature DS1 set) and it could have easily been cracked and burnt from the fire, shapen at the back to resemble a crown.

Also Lothric seems like some weird ass limbo world where the homes of each of the Lords of Cinder kinda get pulled together into a connected mish mash. The areas you are visiting aren't the true locations, but merely representations, or memories of them?

Spoiler
Because you visit the Firelink shrine later and its in ruins.

Yea but
Spoiler
The Chosen Undead was never stated to be a Lord of Cinder, I'm guessing the Link the Fire ending of DS1 changed that?

I think anyone that links the fire is a Lord of Cinder, so I assume the Chosen Undead counts.

somewhat

I giggled when I met solaire, all these years of memes and then to finally see him in the flesh was something

The fights themselves aren't too bad (so far) but it's mostly the slog to a new area and then having to turn back when you run out of health/estus is a bit e____e

I nearly gave up last night tbh

I was getting a bit tired of going through the bridge with the dragon on over and over and over again but ee, gave it one more shot and did it that time. It helps being in a party full of people playing it too, I get that some people enjoy figuring things out for themselves but eh, having a few basic pointers doesn't rub me the wrong way <_<
