No mac version, so I didn't pick up the game yet. Also certain veteran players have expressed ample negative feedback about its features, gameplay and UI.

It doesn't automatically mean that the game 10 years ago was bad. Perhaps there were actually good features in a previous title that made the game more enjoyable, or challenging. If those features were lost then someone would legitimately hold it against the developer. I think that people who complain have a reason to do so, but to find the reason you need to dig a little further.
