A salt Rifle
Too hard for a kid who doesn't speak the language.
What do you mean by this -- genuine question.
I'm not a native English speaker. I didn't grow up in the UK or US, so I didn't formally start learning English until high school. Ocarina of Time came out when I was 6. I understood little to nothing of pretty much every game I played at that age, as they were all in English. Some were fine and simple, like Pokémon, but others weren't. Imagine being 7 years old trying to get through Ocarina for the first time, but the game is entirely in Japanese. I don't think I made it out of the first village area / Deku tree because I had no clue what you were supposed to do.
Oh, that's understandable - I thought you were playing an already translated version.

Okay, here's a quick rundown on my relationship with the series.

-Love Wind Waker

-Ocarina is great, not the best

-I have tried playing MM twice and I just can't get into it. Each time I've made it to the snowy mountains and just give up. I have no idea what it is.

-I hate Twilight Princess's art style, everything looks too bright or murky. The bits where you play as Wolf Link and have to catch all of the bugs actually turns me off, it looks disgusting.

-I can't bring myself to play the 2D games because I don't enjoy those types of games at all and I don't see why a Zelda one would change my mind.

Snowhead is the absolute worst part of that game. I think the rest is totally worth it, though.

I've never even made it to the temple itself. I get the lens of truth and follow the goron ghost then just give up.

Uh-huh, it's a slog. The temple is actually where it picks back up, in my opinion--but there's a lot of mixed opinions of that section overall.

The main appeal of the game is, as Vien said, the sidequesting. You get to know all the people in the town very well over the course of the three day cycle, and the constant brooding atmosphere is remarkable. I'd say give it another shot when you're able--but I dunno how many times you've tried it already.

I know it's the typical answer, but for me, it really is my favorite. OoT. No game has ever made me feel the way OoT has. In fact, I wouldn't even put any games in a list with it that have come out in the past 10 years or so. No game has come close to it, or other games near its time. I know a lot of people don't like The Witcher 3. But now that I think about it, I would put that up there with OoT. TW3 was the best game I have played in years.
do u ever shut up about the witcher 3
ikr

like flee with quake

haven't seen flee talk about quake NEARLY as much

it's just annoying when people don't shut up about how good it is. it actually puts me off of playing it out of a desire to distance myself from the person.

It's phenomenal, you should play it.

Link to the past is my favorite, I've beaten it dozens of times.

Looking back wind waker is probably my second favorite followed by MM and OoT.

The first two were awful and I didn't finish any of the GBA games.

Haven't played the latest one and never finished twilight princess.

Zelda II was the Dark Souls of the NES.

The game wasn't bad--you're bad.

I'm dead serious, it's actually pretty great.

I can see why you wouldn't like the first one, even though that one isn't that bad either.

I've tried to play it again recently because I did not like it at all the first time, but I gave up before even getting the Ocarina back.

It's just a game I don't think I can like

LttP was my first Zelda, I hated the first two when I was a kid and I've only gone back to the first one recently. I can't bring myself to replay the second one.

Twice. I was also using a guide because the sidequests in the town confused me. Maybe I should give it another shot.

Guides have a knack of sucking out all the fun--especially when it comes to Zelda. If you give it another shot, I'd dispense with that unless you're hopelessly stuck.

I'll try it without a guide. I think I'll try and finish OoT first to ease me into the Zelda mood though. I find it hard to just suddenly jump into a new game.

So a few thoughts from me

Link to the Past is still the best 2D Zelda game to me, simply because it laid the foundations of future Zelda's with the Master Sword and everything else, along with general dungeon design and progress for a game at that time

Wind Waker is still the best 3D one. Why? Well, it's not until the very end really, but they actually made Ganondorf a legit character with motives and humanized him instead of just "hurr durr EVUL", and then he finally just says "fuck it " in the end after losing what he spent his entire life for.

That, plus it nicely wraps up the story of Ocarina of Time far more effectively than Twilight Princess did if you ask me (remember Ganondorf says he'll break free at the end of OoT). Why you ask? Simply because the world changed from OoT to Wind Waker for OBVIOUS reasons, yeah, but also because the King of Hyrule was there to symbolize what the sins of our fathers truly weighs on its children, as is apparent in the history of mankind itself.

And that's not really at all getting into the world of Wind Waker and how expansive it was and the world map not being just an empty canvas to go from point A to point B (Twilight Princess)

Twilight Princess, while an enjoyable game to play (seriously, I loved playing it, just not my fav, but saying that =/= it being bad, especially for a Zelda game), didn't feel nearly as inspired in terms of characters, story, or general progression of the world of Hyrule. Everything felt like it was still a standstill. The only characters that really stood out to me were Minda (obviously), and Hero of Time sensei.

I could never get into the originals but man I love Link to the Past. I've always loved games with that style and graphics. Even today like Stardew Valley. But I'm a bit biased, it was my first Zelda I really played all the way through.

Agreed on both fronts. I like reading your thoughts on things; I was actually a little sad when you decided to cancel your Skyward Sword playthrough thread, even though it's not exactly the greatest Zelda game. The game is so polarizing; no two people share the same opinion it. I won't ask you to play it again if you're not interested, though--I'll recommend/talk to you about an actually great game in the series instead.

Have you played the Oracle games at all? I'm going through both of them, and they're actually fantastic. Criminally underrated. I wrote them both off as a lazy cash grab back in the day, because there were two games I had assumed were identical (like Pokémon)--I tried Seasons first many years ago when I was too young to care about the intricacies, and I had fun, but I wasn't overly impressed and assumed that Ages was the same game with minor differences.

I discovered that not only are they completely different games--they're also designed to be linked together and played in concatenation. So while yes, you're paying for two separate games--you're also paying for two quality games that are fully developed, filled to the brim with enriching detail, and have an intimate comprehension of what Zelda is and should be. Someone was asking about Zelda 1 getting a remaster earlier--I'd say the Oracle games are the closest thing to that.

Capcom really played a love chord to the series with everything they've done for the franchise (I never really cared much for Minish Cap, though). This is pre-downfall Capcom, of course--it's games like this that make me upset now to see what they've become.

Thanks for the compliment.

I played the Oracle games a long time ago, and they were enjoyable from what I remember. As for the Skyward Sword one, I'd have loved to finish but the wii motion on my controller was just bugging out so bad, it was literally unplayable. If I could find a workaround for it, I'd love that.

Least favorite is probably Wind Waker or Skyward Sword from the 3D titles (haven't played the latter)
