The retailer of new and used video games has been on shaky ground for a while. Its stock has plummeted more than 31% over the past year.
On Thursday, the company said its overall sales fell 13.6% last quarter compared to a year prior.At the core of GameStop's issues: It's not selling enough video games. CEO Paul Raines said in a statement Thursday that "the video game category was weak, particularly in the back half of 2016." That's because the biggest names in gaming -- Playstation maker Sony (SNE) and Xbox maker Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) -- haven't updated their consoles in a while, Raines said. That creates a lag in business for retailers like GameStop.
The physical store and human interaction will always trump online bullshit.
Kind of sad to see. My local Gamestop growing up was always good to me, and they're the only reliable used game dealer around these days.
I don't know where you live but there's a ton of local game shops in my area that are viable alternatives. They even sell older generation games and consoles too. And the move towards digital markets is itself an affront to used game purchases that absolutely should not be embraced by consumers.

Confirmed, Verb wants to buy Senran Kagura and Akiba Strip for the PS4 but the only person working at the very busy GameStop is a super hot girl cashier.
Used software doesn't exist. You'll can't sell or buy a "used" digital game.

However when it comes to buying a game, I'd rather have it come to me in the mail instead of having to wait till I get a day off and then go to the store to buy it, and only after I'm heckled into trying to buy something else I don't want. That's because most other retailers understand that by the time the customer is at checkout, 99% of the time they don't want to make anymore decisions.

These things come and go every few years, and I don't see it changing. Especially as gamers "grow up" and become more sociable.
