Are there any major differences between each of the Pokemon installments?

Besides different regions and Pokemon designs what are the differences between X/Y, Black/White and the ones before it? At this point the series has to be like sports games where you're playing the same game over again just with different designs.

They really aren't anything like sports games. Sure each has roughly the same idea but they differ in many ways. (Most of which I don't care enough to get into in depth)

Competitively, there are differences. New Pokemon, items, and typings constantly evolve the meta. Hidden Abilities in Generation 5 and Mega Evolutions in Generation 6 have kept the series fresh.

Casually, there really isn't much to do since it's still the same ol' goals of becoming the League Champion and (optionally) completing the Pokedex. Sure, there's a new story and region, but once you explore the region (which is done by completing the story), you're done.

I probably wouldn't still be playing the games if I didn't participate in the competitive aspect since there's just so much that goes into it.

New Pokemon
Are the any difference between the new Pokemon and the ones before them? A new fire type seems like it would bascilly be using the same attacks as a fire type before it just with different designed Pokemon. At this point to me the attacks would be rehashes being used on new Pokemon.

Mega Evolutions.
What do the new evolutions do that make the Pokemon any different besides increasing its health?

Sure, there's a new story.
Aren't the stories basically the same shit since the first games? You start out with either a water, fire or grass type and you head out to defeat the regular gym leaders and once you do that you go off to defeat the champions or whatever they're called?

The differences are pretty substantial if you care to look for them. I don't think it's fair to exclude the regions from our answers, because the regions are basically the root of all the games' differences. You have not only new monsters to catch and train, but new landscapes to explore and look at, new music to listen to, new people to meet, and a new story to follow. Each graphical upgrade allows for new ways to explore that simply weren't possible in previous generations.

Even though your own personal story remains the same (become the champion), there are enough side-plots, NPCs, and overarching themes within each title that truly set each game apart and make each one feel like a unique experience (for the most part).

Each and every Pokémon is very unique in its own right. A new Fire-type introduced will not necessarily entail a carbon copy of the last season's Fire-type. For one thing, there's dual-types--some Pokémon are Fire-types, but others can also be Fire/Flying-types. They also have very different stat distributions, move pools, and innate abilities that not only further their differentiation, but also create their own little niche on each player's team. There are Fire-types that are more offensive-oriented, and then there may be some Fire-types that are more defensive-oriented. Some are fast, some are slow. Some are weak, some are strong. And the best part is that it's all up to you how you want each of your teammates to fight. More Pokémon = more options. It's also important to note that there are also brand new attacks released within each generation, as well, with all their own unique effects.

Mega Evolutions do much more than increase their health. Apart from drastically increasing their other stats, they may also gain a new type and, most importantly, a new ability. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Mega Evolutions--I think Pokémon has yet again found itself in another power creep situation with them, but the fact that you're only allowed one per team tends to balance it out, I find.

I talked about the story in my previous post.

this. the little things add up between generations. theres plenty of variation between all the games, even the "remastered" versions of older games

though the most jarring thing IMO is the way they reworked the special/regular stat system between gens 2 and i think 3? i cant remember.

Yes, not all Fire types will learn the exact same moves and some are more of a physical attacker than a special attacker. Dual types also exist, so something like Charizard (Fire/Flying) will use different moves like Flamethrower and Air Slash while another Fire type such as Blaziken (Fire/Fighting) will use moves such as Flare Blitz and High Jump Kick. New attacks are also introduced with each generation.

Mega Evolutions increase every stat except HP actually. This increase in stats make the Pokemon much more viable in competitive play than before.

That's part of the story, yes, but I mean that each generation has had its own story that coincides with the mascot. Like for Ruby and Sapphire, the story will revolve around Groudon or Kyogre.

the halo games arent quite as different between titles as the pokemon games are, but besides that, its an apples and oranges thing.

From gen to gen there are big differences. X/Y went 3d, Mega Evolutions, new pokemon types, new online features.

It's not at all like sports games, but if you don't play, you won't see how meaningful the changes are.

Verb and CK basically said everything I would have said. You need to actually play the games to really appreciate the changes,

They have basically the same difference between installments, as almost every other Game Series confined to a single Genre. Same core mechanics, similar gameplay, different areas to explore, possibly a few updates to balancing, and a few aesthetic/engine upgrades. Not really sure what else to say here...

I remember when Crystal came by, the game was already more interesting than what it was in Pokemon Red, at least the Silver and Gold version with the Day / Night cycle varying Pokemon spawns added an additional layer of making the world feel more real. The moment that you also go up the mountain to fight Red is also one that hasn't been repeated in the future installments.

I also fondly remember Ruby and Sapphire, I enjoyed those games due to the customizations, and the Pokemon themselves. After that I've just been losing more and more interest, because the games are changing into something different from what I was familiar with in the games.
