I haven't read the newest novels but I don't recall humans discovering technologically advanced species along the way. I have no idea what was up with that.

New humanoid species they introduced known as Yonhet. http://www.halopedia.org/Yonhet Quite frankly I don't think it was needed, and the mask looks bad. Reminds me of Drell from Mass Effect
